Wifey and I are within a year of paying off our debt and two years from moving. One of my long time goals (since '91) was to start a retreat center. I has adapted to the times over the yeas but still holds true to the main idea of being a Christian based (open to all groups but Christian themes will be around) community center. One of my thoughts since being published is start a annuel writers getaway. A week (or however long you wanted to come during that week) where authors could get away from all the other distractions and refocus on their writing. It would be like a big writers commune (boy, did I spell that word wrong), time to share ideas, problems, plans, and even showcase some shortstories in a fireside sharing at night.

So would this interest may of you? I'm just kind of testing the waters right now. One of the reasons why we are working to pay off debt first (we could do it now if we wanted to) is we want to make the camp as inexpensive as possible. Right now I'm thinking $50 per night/person, food included. Would you travel to Oregon for something like that?

50.00 a night is not a bad price for a 'vacation' away from stresses and not only is Oregon not far for me, but it's beautiful country. I'd consider it if the amenities were worth it. For me, I'd want a place where group participation wasn't mandatory, but available if I wanted. I'd go to a place like that for the quiet, and to basically rejuvenate. Perhaps not a lot of day time events, but I like your idea of fireside sharing at night.

Just my thoughts.

Kevin, since my husband lived in Washington for several years as a teenager and has wanted to take me there for as long as I've known him, I know he wouldn't mind driving me to Oregon and taking a side trip to Washington. As long as it was held sometime we could get away, I'd do my best to attend.

Kevin~

I'd hop into one of Joyce's suitcases and go with her! :-)

Yes, I would love to attend something like that. Sounds great.

Lee Ann, you are small enough to fit in one of her suitcases you cute little thing.

If I had the time off I would go to something like that as well Kevin. It is a good idea.

I would go to a retreat if it was in a place I wanted to be and I could afford the transportation. I would not know how to interact with other writers, though. I am not good at critiquing, and do my best personal work while alone. Interruptions in my thought processthrow me off for a week orlonger.
My best work is done in quiet surroundings, alone, without outside stimuli. So even if I could afford to attend a retreat, I might not go.

I'm kind of a werido though.

I keep picturing it as more of a time to rejuvinate creative juices than workshopping, though if that spontaniously erupted I wouldn't squash it. The only "organized" activity would be a volentary sharing of short stories "around the campfire" kind of thing at night. It is still a few years away but I still think about it alot. Sort of an obsession of mine.

Paglia,

The one thing that has kept me from any writer's 'retreats' for which I've received advertisements is the item that has been mentioned already. "Structure". I like the idea you pose, with the only real structure being the fireside chat at night.

When I do find time to write, it is time that I don't want outside stimuli, I don't want someone telling me what to do, and it is the only time I have away from anything resembling "work". Too much structure at a 'retreat' takes the rejuvenation aspect completely away, leaving the participant needing a vacation to recover from their vacation.

Them's my ramblin's.

LA,

Thank you. Them's my sentiments.
Creativity doesn't come from "routine".
Routine is what you need to publish it.
Kevin, I hope your dreams are realized.

I feel the same way. I would love to go to a retreat but only if it meant I could hide away from anything and anyone if that's what I want. I did a lot of writing one summer when I had my three kids, my sisters' three and at least a dozen neighborhood kids coming in and out all day and night. I was actually very creative, so what most people consider distractions don't distract me, but give me a structure or instructions on writing and I go completely blank.

Oregon, of course, is in the complete opposite corner of America from me, but I would love to find something like that closer to home. Especially in a few years when the kids are grown.

Gloria
