http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/5236958/?GT1=3584 I wish them all the best, and hope it brings about the private-sector financing of space travel they look for...in fact, I believe I mentioned in an interview not long ago that private financing would be the key... www.geocities.com/toddmhunter |

Todd, I share your good wishes. This is great. I don't see why the space ship segment accommodates three people. Looks like one man could ride the rocket up and come down with it. Nothing else will be going on. I'm sure their finished product will be configured differently. Got an explanation? bn |

Bill, In order to win the X-Prize, they have to send 2 people up twice in 2 weeks. It's kind of funny that they spent $20M to get a $10M prize - but then, it's never been about the money for the folks that have been working on these things. Way cool... I'll have to have my MSNBC on on monday! CEW |

The group from the article sounded like they were just looking to win the X-Prize so they could cut their costs in half...heh... As far as three seats, Bill, the X-Prize is an incentive to get designs out there which will haul passengers for low orbit flights. The other two seats, it sounds like, will eventually be for passengers (for the X-Prize, it sounds like they can either put real people in the other two seats, or ballast/dead weight equal to people). Monday's flight will be with only the one pilot, thus why it's not being considered as a 'formal X-Prize attempt'. Sounds to me like Rutan is just wanting to validate his design before shooting for the full attempt. Maybe to cut costs more, they could get sponsors to ante up, and they could put decals on the craft, a la Nascar? :-) |
