I am putting the finishing touches on a short story, and I would like some comment from older contributors to the board on a particular item. In the story I mention the country "Sudan." Actually, an older character refers to it as "the Sudan."

I grew up in Western Pennsylvania and when that country was in the news, I remember it, perhaps erroneously, as being referred to as THE Sudan. Is the isogloss for this reference pretty much narrowed to my geographical upbringing? Or does this ring a bell to some of you living in other parts of the country?

I have not positively identified a location in the story, so that if the reference is too narrow, I will drop the 'the.'

I'm roughly of your generation, Frank, and a few years older than you. In High School Geography, and in news stories of that day, we called it The Sudan.

As far back as I can remember, it was called THE SUDAN in everything from high school history to Civics and Sr. Problems, and before that in all studies of History of the world.

I am a grad of '62 from the West, California, specifically. That's the way I remember it.

Thank you all for your response. This wide geographical use of THE Sudan made me think there must be more to it than just something that cropped up in our speech, so I delved a bit further. What I eventually learned explains the THE. Before 1956 or thereabouts, Sudan was not a country, but a region of Africa, like THE Sahara. Ha, one learns something every day! Thanks again.

Frank,

I don't know about regional speak regarding the country, but when referring to the country, I say "Sudan". Referring to the desert region, I state, "the Sudan desert." But then, I've never really been a conformist. LOL

Frank, not only do I remember it being referred to as "The Sudan," I remember a wrestler from my childhood who was purported to have been from "The Sudan."

Oh, no. I remember distinctly, Bill. He was named Armand Hussein.

I've now revealed my deepest, darkest secret . . . I loved professional wrestling when I was a child. I have autographs and everything.
