Hi all - here's the text from my first press release, scheduled to go out tomorrow.

If you've got time, let me know what you think:

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE HITS HOME

DIVIDE, COLORAD - MARCH 6, 2002 Domestic violence is not simply someone else’s problem. It lives here and in homes all across the nation. It also fills the pages of When You Wish Upon A Star, a new release from Smiles and Blessings, Inc. In this debut novel by Divide, Colorado author, Nancy Marie, draws from personal experience to create a page-turning novel that will give the reader not only an insight as to what it is like to be abused but also an understanding of why women stay in abusive relationships. Published in January, 2002 by AmErica House Publishers, When You Wish Upon A Star, focuses on the issue of domestic violence, and surviving and healing from its long-term effects. Set in Estes Park, Colorado, this inspirational suspense-filled romance novel, not only covers the subject of domestic violence but does so with humor, warmth, insight, and graphic realism.

Early reviews have been excellent. Amanda Killgore of TheRomanceReader.Com, states:

“…Excitement mixes with warmth in this tale that sheds light on the problem of domestic abuse. Paige...Her trust in the Lord may waver once or twice, but remains deep throughout. Lance is... kind, handsome, considerate, generous….The supporting cast are all heartwarming as well. Justin brings in the element of evil that makes this a book to read with the lights on. You will be well pleased if you get this novel.”
Amanda Killgore, Reviewer - TheRomanceReader.com

Nancy Marie will be holding a book signing at the Lake George Public Library on March 23, 2002 at 2:00 p.m. The author will be speaking on the topic of domestic violence as well as providing tips on writing, publishing and promoting novels in today’s highly competitive market. Refreshments will be provided and books will be available for purchase. The author is also available for interviews and review copies are available upon request.

Kitty:

Good job. Nice press release. I'm certain you probably know this, however, be sure to put a contact: section. Most releases require contact: (name of party to contact) and release date. The press release you wrote should help lots. You might send a release to PAR -- People Against Rape, and the Domestic Violence shelters too.

Best of luck! Another resource could be the Chamber of Commerce in your area. Hospitals - contact Human Resources to find out who to send it to, radio stations, the list continues...

Domestic violence is an issue close to my heart since I grew up watching my parents fight like cats and dogs while I stood between them, serving as referee. I vowed to myself as a child that I would never become a victim of it. Back in those days it was a 'family matter.' Now, finally it is out of the closet and people realize it actually does happen -- not only to women, to men too. Men are so ashamed they don't mention or tell anyone. Suppose it must be part of the male ego, but it does happen. I don't know the statistics. Like rape, much of it remains quiet. I admire your courage to educate others.

Hi Barbie, and thanks for the kind words and suggestions. Yes, there is contact information on the press release, I just didn't want to post it here...cause...cause I just don't know everyone well enough to give out that kind of information over the internet. Does that make sense?

That was really an excellent press release, Nancy Marie. I'm impressed.
I also know a thing or two or three about domestic violence and child abuse so your book is one I hope to read some day.

Sounds great Nancy! Wishing you all the best. Prevention of domestic violence is one of the things I strongly support. I came from an abusive family, then stumbled right into an abusive marriage. My self esteem took a real sh** kicking and it took years for me to figure out that it wasn't my fault. Vowing to not let it happen to me didn't help. I got sucked in and before I knew it...
Anyone who can get out of such a situation and can break the cycle earns my immense respect.
Congratulations Nancy, for writing a novel that touches people everywhere.

Laurel and Jennifer - thank you both for your kind words and for taking the time to read it. I guess I must'a learned a thing or two from my stressful, hectic years as a newspaper reporter besides trying to outdrink my boss, never did win that contest. He even offered me a raise one time if I'd drink down the worm at the bottom of a bottle of tequila. Fortunately, I wasn't that far gone, and knew he'd never keep that promise, anyway.

Line edits, Kitty:

In this debut novel by Divide, Colorado author, Nancy Marie, draws from...
***remove the comma after Marie. Interrupts the sentence.

Publishers, When You Wish Upon A Star, focuses on...
***double-check this, but I don't think you need the comma after Star.

The author is also available for interviews and review...
***is should be 'will be' in order to keep the whole paragraph in the same verb tense.
***comma after interviews to avoid a run-on sentence.

You're wording is good. Just those few errors for proper grammar, and you're set to go. I like it.

I wish you all the best, Kitty. Domestic Violence is still a topic most people don't like to touch. It is persistent people with a mission in life that help bring these topics to the foreground. I, too, am a survivor in more ways than I care to admit.

Blessed be,

LA

LA - Thanks, appreciate that. I need a comma-zapper/blaster, they have a habit of falling out of they sky and landing nilly-willy where ever they please.
