A little trivia pursuit here. Which grammatically challenged politician was famous for these quotes? About Salvadoran officials: "We expect them to work toward the elimination of human rights." "Republicans understand the importance of bondage between a Mother and child." "I believe we are on an irreversible trend toward more freedom and democracy but that could change." To United Negro College Fund: "What a terrible thing to have lost one's mind. Or not to have a mind at all. How true that is." "If we do not succeed, then we run the risk of failure." "We're going to have the best educated American people in the world." "My friends, no matter how rough the road may be, we can and we will, never, never surrender to what is right." "I have made good judgments in the past. I have made good judgments in the future." "I was known as the chief grave robber in my state." "I stand by all the misstatements that I've made." "It isn't pollution that's harming the environment. It's the impurities in our air and water that are doing it." "I love California. I practically grew up in Phoenix." "For NASA, space is still a high priority." "We are ready for any unforeseen event that may or may not occur." "I deserve respect for the things I did not do." "Our party has been accused of fooling the public by calling tax increases revenue enhancement. Not so. No one was fooled." Frederick A. Babb Preview books: http://frederickbabb.bravehost.com |

It would be interesting to see video clips of any of us posting to this discussion board handling a press conference. (Been there, done that, was appalled.) |

Would it be a great thing if every citizen wanted to vote for the same person? Frankly, Kerry scares me for his inability to do anything other than the politically expeident. Has anybody asked "Why did he volunteer to go into the military?" John Kerry's maternal grandfather, James Grant Forbes, was born in Shanghai, China, where the Forbes family of China and Boston accumulated a fortune in the opium and China trade, and became an international businessman and attorney living in France and England. John Kerry's maternal grandmother, Margaret Tyndal Winthrop, came from a family with deep roots in Massachusetts history, and was raised in Boston. Her grandfather was Robert Charles Winthrop, the conservative Whig Speaker of the House and a senator, and her ancestors include James Bowdoin, former governor of Maine, and John Winthrop, the first governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Other notable figures in this branch of Kerry's family tree are Franklin D. Roosevelt (4th cousin twice removed), Jane Addams, Calvin Coolidge (8th cousin once removed), and ironically, George H.W. Bush (9th cousin once removed), and George W. Bush (9th cousin, twice removed). Could it be he was GROOMED to be president of the USA? Can you say Manchurian canidate? |

Gary K., Agreed. As much as I dislike Mr. Kerry, and disliked My Quayle, I must grudgingly defend them. I've done a lot of public speaking and it's painfully easy to get either fumble-tongued or to be so slow and careful that you appear stupid (or drugged). And through all of that you are aware that someone is recording every word. And trying not to sweat. And hoping you don't blow a booger out your nose while you're talking. And constantly wondering if your fly's closed. etc etc etc It's a tough thing to be great at. (ala Dubya's goofs) So picking apart every nuance is a little unfair. Although I DO fervently hope that Mr Kerry's campaign crashes and burns spectacularly in November. Later, Olen A |

BTW, I didn't mean to seem that I'm GREAT at public speaking. I only give myself a C+ at best. Olen A |

The video of me preaching (filling in) in front of a congregation of a couple hundred back in 1998 is good viewing. Never flubbed once. Not in the litergy either Then again, I wasn't running for office. www.stevenshrewsbury.com |

In 1976 - I preached my first sermon. In 79 - pastored my first church and until 2001, I preached at least three times a week. I still hate to listen to myself on tape and for nightmares, I watch myself on video. In those many many years, I learned to stay away from some words and some phrases. If you ever make a mistake, you will make a dozen. Bush is super with a prepared speech, he is horrible speaking off the cuff. The problem is he is afraid of using the wrong word. He thinks too much about how to say what he is going to say. Kerry, as a speaker, speaks for impact, not for content. His speeches are dull because he lacks delivery skills but his content improves. He is comfortable speaking off the cuff but lacks content. Much like a lawyer, has great command of a few facts and can keep working those facts to fill time. |
