I had a brilliant idea! A Non-Fiction writer teaming up with a Fiction writer. After all, there have been many examples of individuals throughout the history of this Planet, who have collaborated and produced great works of Art, Music, Musicals, and yes, even Books. We get along, and share a wicked sense of humor, a way with words, and thoroughly enjoy Writing. What could go Wrong What is wrong with this picture? Then the Fiction writer made an observation, and voiced a few concerns. The conversation went something like this: "It took me an hour to write that scene and you went in there and changed the whole mood," the Fiction writer exclaimed. "I just went in there, gave the characters a little more dimension, gave the scene a little more color, and added some sex. Is there anything wrong with that?" "So now I can't write sex scenes? I'm known for my sex scenes you know," the Fiction writer reminded him. "Your sex scenes are great! However, they are very brief and lack reader involvement." "So what you're saying is that my sex scenes aren't satisfying enough for the general reading public!?" "You are always complaining about the breath, depth, and time span of a sexual encounter. I was just putting into words your dreams and desires. I mean, after all we have had many conversations about this." The Fiction writer began squirming in the seat. "Well, yeah, you have a point! HOWEVER, the mood of this scene was supposed to involve fear not just the mere disappointment of it all!" I looked deeply into the accusing eyes of the Fiction writer. I thought for a moment and said, "I have the impression that you have, through my descriptive and active words, that this has hit too close to home." The Fiction writer was shocked and awed by his intuitive statement, but couldn't deny it. "Maybe we should watch some television and rethink what we have been talking about." A few moments passed. I took the hint and saved the work in progress. We had dinner, went out shopping, and caught up on the continuing conversation on this forum. The Fiction writer turned to me and said, "I need to learn to write with someone else and meld with that person. This process isn't as easy as I thought it would be." Tune in next week for more shocking developments in the Soap Opera, "Collaboration..." The great thing about fiction writers, to quote Stephen King (Sorta) is that we are great liars...and one never has to tell the truth. www.stevenshrewsbury.com GODFORSAKEN Behler Publications |
