Thought some of you might find this interesting. It's obviously in response to a query I sent. Thanks very much for your query letter regarding your novels. "I'm sorry to say that I don't feel we could represent this for you successfully because of the fluctuations in the publishing marketplace. The publishing business has been erratic since the latter part of 1995, when most publishers took a big fall in sales. Sales were mixed until 1999, and then got better. However, 2001 was a very bad year in terms of bottom-line profits, because most publishers produced too many units of too many different titles, and therefore were either marginally profitable or actually took a loss for the year. 2002 was also marginal, and sales fell apart in early October through the Christmas selling season. 2003 was better for nonfiction, but fiction sales were still very soft, and 2004 continued the same. Publishers have been cutting back on their lists, and editors are still buying extremely carefully. We take on very few new clients, and only on projects that strike us as having very special "handles" that strike us as fresh and vivid. I wish I could say something more specific about what you've submitted, but we are receiving between forty to sixty queries a week these days--and it is just impossible to read and consider and comment in detail" Bill Nelson RISEN, ISBN 1-93301616-4 Behler Publications |

Andrea, It was an NY Agency not a publisher.Further, it was an e-mail response because I didn't send a SASE and asked them to please advise me by e-mail. Those that I get no response from will simply save me another terse form letter, if they reject it.

Now if I'd have read the response I might have figured that out. But as I've posted elsewhere on this board, readin' don't seem to be my strong suit lately. How do you know for sure which ones will be open to replying by email when they don't necessarily list it? A Internal Memo: "You'd better learn proper grammar. Andrea, I don't know and don't care. I've cut my mail costs in half by not sending SASE. I don't need to pay for rejections. I only want to hear from those that might be interested. After 90 days, no answer, I scratch them off. You'd be surprised at the quality conversation (even in rejection) I've had those who take the time to E-mail.They are more'caring' and professional even in denial. If they want to send me a form letter or scratch "not for us" on my letter and send it back at my expense, then the words "screw them" comes to mind.
