If the story is about the girl's journey with her mother to the riverside home and her discovery of her mother and her secrets:
Mother's Way
The way with Mother
The banks of Yesterday
Flowing Past
Healing Waters
Journey with me.
Secret Returning
On the Banks of Yesterday
Ripples of What Was
Time in New England
Cold River Secrets
Frigid Heart
Come out of the Cold
Daughter Mine
Her Daughter
Being her Daughter
Daughter of Mystery
Crying River
I make lists and just put words together, but it's not helping with one work I have since I wrote it in two parts and now can't arrive at one title that brings them together. I feel your pain, Joy.

Cora, I feel my pain too.

Thank you all for such great ideas. Even Fred's Untitled Manuscript idea might work. Then again, maybe not. I will go through all of the suggestions and with a little rearranging of words, will probably find the right title. For now, I'm going to go visit my new step-granddaughter. :-)

sorry about the lack of caps in the titles, but my cap key keeps sticking, so use your imagination. i have to repeat each cap about six times and delete and backspace to get one single cap, and it ain't worth it........

Anything short and to the point.~

One word titles work best:

Daylight
Nightfall
Darkness

Oceantide
The River
The Door

etc. etc.

Joy, you've probably tired of this thread you started, but started it you did. I noticed none of us gave much, if any, of an explanation for our sugested titles. I'd briefly like to explain some of the latent power in the pair of phrases I pulled from your synopsis, which Laurel also saw as possibilities.

'Spontaneous Purchase'
There's always risk with spontaneous behavior, suggesting what you get may be more than what you bargained for. This is doubly emphasized by the word 'purchase.' We may be buying more than what we ever expected: e.g., a pit bull for personal protection, but the animal gets loose and kills a child; sleeping pills to help us sleep, but a daughter takes them to end her life. There is also the other meaning of 'purchase,' which is 'leverage.' Judging from your synopsis, the move into the remote cabin gives the daughter some instant leverage on her mom.

'Determined to Ruin'
This phrase leaves it open as to who is doing the determination that will take your characters down the wrong path. Is it the mother, with her acquisition of the cabin? Or is it the daughter? This unanswered question provides some mystery to the reader from the start. And although not as strongly, the phrase also suggests a fatalism.

To all who posted to my thread, I love all of your suggestions. It would take another three cups of coffee for me to answer all individually, but what an amazing bit of advice. Even Fred's "A Book For Fred" sounded so almost well...it's adorable, Fred. You gave me a chuckle when I needed it most. :-)

Did I mention that Kayla's mom had bought the cabin on Ebay? I'll probably put that in the synopsis when I wake up. Here's something that occurred to me: If I can somehow get the word Ebay in the title, think how many hits my book's website, possibly even Amazon.com will get when people accidentally end up there just looking for one of the Internet's favorite sites. Picture me sitting here with an evil grin. Okay, just kidding.

Thank you for the compliments on Abigail. :-)

Frank had a good point. Why did we choose the titles we did.

River through the Arctic Hell- You mentioned that the girl had to do a ‘forced march into Arctic Hell’. The River is used in many books, movies as a way to the truth, direction, and understanding. I seen the river as the path that the girl found that exposed the secrets her friends and mother had.

All the others was just a play on words.

Fred and Olen -

You're rank amateurs when it comes to "crap". I have two EX-wives!

Joy -

Your quest got me sufficiently interested in titles that I went to my stats on my web site and ranked all 21 articles in order of number of hits. Eliminating those that are too recent to have acquired a decent number, here they are:
1. The Refrigerator Light
2. Saddam
3. The Politics of Hate
4. The Think Game
5. The Super Bowl
6. I Left My Heart...
7. Back-to-School
8. Who's Doing the Work?
9. News Commentary
10. Darkness and Silence
11. Fawn Season
12. How to Respond???
13. Leap Day
14. Election Aftermath
As I indicated before, there seems to be no correlation between titles and hits. Just call it something, and leave the rest to your editor.

Hi Joy,

Nine times out of ten when I'm working on a novel I've already named it before I started then I end up changing it ( every time ) before the story is finished. Do I do this on purpose? No. For some reason by the end of the book a better title always pops up that perfectly fits. Joy, sometimes you have to be patient with a title ( I know it's hard ) but it's like editing a book. The title is the number one seller to an agent, publisher and the public. I say put that piece away for a few days and MARK MY WORDS. I've had titles come to me out of nowhere! Sometimes I'm watching televison and a great one will come or riding in the car seems to spark my imagination. I think the reason you can't think of one now is because you've been working on the book, your mind is jumbled and you need to take a little break. Your mind will reward you once it's had a little rest. I just think you're too anxious plus you've been busy fixing up the work. I say take it slow, rest and I bet you a great title will pop into your head. Just make sure your creativity button is open and ready to accept.

Stacy
www.stacy-deanne.net

P.S. Of course it's murder when you've racked your brain to come up with a magnificent, fitting title and your agent or publisher decides to change it. If this happens, go with THEIR idea. They know what's best in terms of marketing, etc. Believe me if a publisher or agent wants to change your book title it's for a pretty good reason. If you're being published through a traditional publisher, believe that this is going to happen more times than you can count. LOL. My publisher has already changed the title of one of my books three times. Do I care? Nope, because they know what's best. Hang in there and you'll get that title.

Thank you Stacy, (and Kevin, Tom, and everyone else). Stacy, I think you're right. I've been working with the book, but other things in life have been hectic too.

To Kevin, I understand where you're coming from with your "arctic hell" suggestion. Although it would make a cool (pun intended) title, it was just the way the girl sees the move, not the gist. I didn't put much focus on climate differences. I put myself in her shoes; a kid who's been told she's moving to the north after living all her life south and the "forced march..." is her rebellious and over-dramatic-typical teenage perception of things. But it is an interesting title and I'll consider it after I take Stacy's suggestion serious. We are remodeling our kitchen, so I have to make room for a s##tload of cabinets getting delivered this week, and flying to Florida on the first...jeez, no wonder I can't title the freaking book. My mind is numb...

you can actually come up with a great title by totally clearing your mind.

Yes, just draw a complete blank...and then it comes.

It works for me, but I meditate.~

That's good Kevin. The dollar and purple ink is in the mail.

I thank you all for your great suggestions, and now that you've enlivened my brain cells, I played with some wordage. In my book, Kayla had at some point told her mom about her imaginary portal in her closet that would take her places when she was about four. I love the concept of "portals" to weird places, so I came up with the following ideas for the title:

"A Portal to Yesterday Won at Ebay" (with Ebay's permission)

"Buy It Now: A Portal to Yesterday"

"Portal To Yesterday Won at Auction"

"Sold to The Highest Bidder: Portal to Yesterday" (too long?)

or just "A Portal To Yesterday"

Opinions welcome.

Ebay portal to yesterday?

But to be honest with you, none of those names would make me pick up the book unless it had a very good cover art. Portal to Yesterday might make me pick it up if it had a good cover. The others, no. Sorry, but this is just my opinion and mine alone.

hmmmm..."A Book For Fred"....it's actually catchy. If it fit somehow in the theme of things...I'd use it. Perhaps it'll be my next book, Fred. :-)

Sometimes I come up with a title first, and the plot develops around that, and other times I have the plot, but the title takes forever to arrive in my mind.

MASTER OF THE SCROLLS came plot first (very detailed, which is unusual for me... usually I start with a page of illegible scrawl, and spin off the outline from that - usually to about 20 pages, but it depends how complex the plot is. MASTER OF THE SCROLLS was a very complex plot and the outline I 'followed' was VERY detailed from the start!)

The title for PORTRAIT OF SHADE came pretty much at the same time as the plot. I was looking up possible character names for another novel in my compendium of names, and came across Spiridon/Dusan, which led to Diocletian and Constantine, and in a heartbeat the basic plot and title were there fully formed. (See my website for more information about that book, which should be out at the end of the year.)

Originally, MASTER OF THE SCROLLS was a one off, but I developed a sequel, THE MASTER OF TIME, and then last year I was plotting a new novel (completely separate), and a couple of characters from MASTER OF THE SCROLLS suddenly appeared in the outline, and went off on their own adventure... so did a lot of cut and pasting with the two separate plotlines, combining them, and ELENDALE came into being, with THE MASTER OF TIME being pushed back to become a third book of a trilogy. I began writing ELENDALE, but no one liked the title (it's the name of the fictional village where it's set, smack bang in the middle of a crisscross of ley lines), so I did a lot of soul searching to come up with something more appropriate. Since the first and last books have the word MASTER in them, I decided the middle one needed to have the word too, and so THE MASTER OF PROPHECY was born.
