THE LIGHTS OF HOME Sandy Williams Driver Behler Publications Lake Forest, Calif. (2005) Reviewed by C. J. Morace (Author of COCODRIE and APPALACHIA) This is the tale of a lifetime, and it is not hard to imagine yourself at your grandfather’s knee listening to the recounting of an extraordinary boyhood as you read. In what seems like such a distant past, characters that could well have been our own family come alive with Ms. Driver’s keen storytelling style. The incidents often return to one boy’s obsession with Christmas, but the story strongly transcends the holiday theme. It would be a great holiday gift but is too good to be denied reading in any season. Unmatched for charm and fresh style, I’ll put “Lights” up against any nostalgic Southern fiction I’ve ever read. A true treat and a wonderful first effort from a talented new author. Highly Recommended ***** |

I need to add this means that Behler has another winner. My congratulations to Sandy Driver and to Lynn and crew for this fine work. If you enjoyed "The Painted House" by John Grisham, or liked "My Girl" or "The Red Flyer" you'll love this book. I was actually reading a Pulitzer Prize winning novel when I decide to "just get a start" on this Behler book that I recieved as a trade for a copy of APPALACHIA. Hours later I finished "Lights" without ever returning to the best seller. It is that good, in my opinion, you owe it to yourself to read this book. CJ |
