Hi Everyone,

I am looking for sites that provide interviews and host chats for authors. I am mainly interested in sites geared towards:

new authors
minority authors
authors of teen books
women sites offering author chats

I have found some but wanted to see if anyone could provide more options or perhaps a link that could help me.

Thanks in advance,

Stacy

The Emerging Writers Network has interviews and reviews with literary folks such as writers, publicists, journal editors, publishers, blog site hosts. Don't think they have a chat room though. Since I don't chat I seldom pay attention to that feature.

I'm borrowing (hijacking) this thread to ask for suggestions.

My website gets very little traffic. I'm interested in success stories from people who get hundreds of hits a week. What are the tricks and secrets?

Would it be a good idea to start a whole new topic devoted to promotion?

I thought we had a topic devoted to promotion around here somewhere...

As far as internet traffic, I'd imagine it would be a matter of telling all your friends, and them telling their friends. Have something people want to see, and want to come back for...

Thus, explaining the popularity of the Pod-Dy Mouth blog and PostSecret (which, oddly enough, has led to the release of a new book by the owner of said site)...

Granted, both of those are technically blogs...but the basis behind the number of hits they receive (I'm guessing more than 100 a week) still stands for other sites.

Dennis,
Frequent more boards like this one, and others that cater to your genre. On EVERY one of your posts, throw up your url in the ACTUAL post. I'm convinced that it's helped me out a great deal.

Scott is right. And the groups don't necessarily have to be writing related. I think the members of other kinds of groups tend to be curious about writers and want to see samples of their work without being asked when they see a link in the signature.

Oh, and of course make all your posts brilliant and awe-inspiring! LOL

It's a puzzle, Dennis.

I get lots of hits after posting on AW. I get some after posting here. But does that translate to sales?

Very little.

I would really like to learn how to use the Internet to get sales. I can't run around posting all over the place. No time - and I don't post to message boards primarily for sales. To me, that's pretty close to spamming - and a little dishonest. I try to post certain places because I'm really interested in the topic.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. I feel that if I could just get people to read "Malevolence," they would want the rest of the series. But how to do it?

A little off topic, but I got a nice e-mail from a woman who saw me on a certain site. However, she went to her local library and found Graven Images. So - no sale, but again, if someone likes one of your books, maybe they'll buy the rest. It's that first taste that seems to be so important.

Someone is making me a website. The editor of New Works Review said a major part of getting good internet exposure is to embed something in various places on the site, is it hypertexts? Someone more computer literate than I am might know the term. NWR is now getting upwards of 15,000 visitors a month. Not just hits, people who come and stay awhile, and he says it is because of the imbedded thingies. That whole thing I just wrote sounds dumb. Sorry.

I would say that most of my sales lately have come from my exposure on NWR. Not all, but many sales.

metatags, perhaps...
I'm fuzzy on the details of those, which will probably be why I'll have a professional make up my next website...

YES. Metatags. Supposedly they are easy to imbed but I have no clue how to do it.

There is a trick to metatags.

Metatags are searchable words that are imbedded into a webpage that describe the content of the page. In order for them to be successful, they must be relevant to the actual content of the page.

For example... Dennis, if you put your name on a webpage as a metatag, the more times your name appears in that page, the better the relevance of any searches for your name. The higher the relevance, and the better you plot out those tags with the content of your site, the more frequently and closer to the top of the list your site link will appear in a search engine, or metasearch engine.

There are websites that will scrub your metatags for you for free to tell you if you have them well designed and defined. I don't remember them off the top of my head, but type "metatags" into a search engine or metasearch engine (such as www.dogpile.com) and you will come up with these services.

Do a couple of real-world tests... open a search engine, and type "mindsight" and see what you get (keep in mind, I haven't scrubbed my tags for a while...). For the record, Mindsightseries.com gets about 10,000 hits a day, which usually translates into around 1000-1500 visitors (not bad for a site with 300 registered users). For fun and curiousity, type "publish america" and see what you get ;)

Naturally, the traffic to this site can be directly linked to the forum and the discussion here (rather than my own work :-(). It doesn't hurt to have something that attracts return visits - like a blog, message board, chat feature, newsletter, etc... But be careful... you could get sucked in and end up spending your life on your website - trust me. :-)

A few of you here have stated that you're not getting much traffic to your site. That's certainly true at mine and I feel certain it is the case at the websites of many other authors, This week's New Yorker offers a cartoon that might explain the reason behind the absence of visitors. The cartoon by PCVEY shows a man sitting and staring at his monitor. A woman standing to his left (I presume she is the wife) says, "Maybe nobody goes to your Web site because it's about you."

I've found at least one reason for the lack of visitors to my website. Over at www.Myshelf.com there is a link that simply says "My website" or something like that. I never tested it until three days ago and when I clicked on it, it went looking for my old "Homestead" website. I switched servers well over a year ago. Duh!!!

Someone mentioned blogspot on another thread. Since blogspot is owned by google and the blogspots are placed in their search database, that might help. I also discovered that being listed on poets and writers has helped me, but P and W does not accept PA published books to make up the number of points you need to qualify for a listing there.

Technorati tags (of which I just became aware) are another way to allow others to find your site...

How about links to other author websites? I talked to my webmistress yesterday and she suggested that I start contacting every author I know and set up a bunch of exchanges.
