This is my first posting so I hope I don't mess it up too much. I have published one novel (The Brothers Seven) and have just finished my second which I will get published soon (Midge and the Kid Series: Camels Eye)

I have decided to just write and publish and worry about the business side of things later. I am now retired and like to write stories.

The Brothers Seven is the first of a four part series of Social Justice Thrillers that deal with the injustices happening to the American worker by the Corporate CEO's. I wrote it as therapy for what I think is a great injustice to the American people. I have had great reviews from it, but I'll explain that later.

I am a Michigan writer and have decided to write a series that is based in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. The first story is about a lost emerald called the Camels Eye and twenty-three America hostages being held in Iran who is demanding the return of the emerald in exchange for the hostages. It all takes place in the Sault area.

Anyway, a friend of mine asked me why I write and how I find the ideas to write about. I told him I have a file with more ideas than I will ever be able to turn into novels. I like to find historical facts and then make them fit my story. I also like to educate the reader of my books with real facts about geography, history, people, wars, tools, science, or any other real world facts I can throw in that fit into the story. I think it makes the story interesting.

I am new so I am learnig a lot as I go. My main motivation right now is my 81 year old mother who wants my next book. She loved the last one and thinks I can produce one in about two months. (I can't)

In spite of rejection letters, poor plots, lack of character development, poor speech habits, and improper sentences or other short comings, I am going to continue to write.

My goal is to tell the reader a fun and interesting story that they can't put down until they are finished. If I surprise or entertain the reader along the way, so much the better. I measure sucess by how much a reader enjoys my story, not by the financial sucess of the venture.

I finally told my my friend that I write fiction, not facts. I want it to be believable but I am only really writing it for fun, so what if someone criticizes you, as long as it is a great read, so be it.

I don't know how others feel about their writing, but for me there is no pressure as long as I have writing them and people have fun reading them.

Have a great day. Sorry if I messed up my first posting.

Mike

Welcome Mike,
You struck a chord with your views on research and realism in writing. For me that is a lot of the reward, learning facts that I can pass along in an interesting way. And writers do have the power through fiction to express opinion, to educate and to influence. Remember the Parables....
I believe that you can do much more than entertain with a good book and I'm saddened by many best-selling authors who choose to ignore their opportunities, and their mainstream editors and publishers who fail to see the value in proper research and facts, instead producing "fluff" that they opine will suit their less than intellectual readers.
I think we've had this discussion before on this board about "dumbing down" for the readers.....so let me take my soapbox and move on. Just wanted to put my amen to your opinions, good luck to you.

Thanks for the kind words Cora. I am of the opinion that most writers want to educate or at least inform their readers in something. I also beleive that every character in a book reflects the author's life views. Even if you write about a villan, you put what you think they are like into your book. You may be wrong, but it is how you view the world.

Being labeled right, left, center, liberal, conservative, religious, racist, pacifist, or any other handle the world puts on you (or you put on yourself) , writing is a way of putting your views out to the world. Readers feel emotions when you stack the deck on a character no matter if you want the character to loved or dispised.

The power of the author is great. A few little incidences can make the reader cheer for the character or detest him or her. I do try to guard against going overboard with that, but I know I write with all my experiences and prejudices every time. I think we all do.

I love to educate the reader with facts I have researched and used in my stories, but not at the expense of being a great read. I look at educating the reader as a bonus, not my goal.

What do everyone else think?
