Here's something I haven't seen anything on and wonder how to handle it. Many novels (and perhaps even nonfiction) have quotes of a couple of lines at the beginning of a chapter at the top of the page above the Chapter heading. My question is, are these quotes included in the manuscript when it's submitted to agents or publishers? And if so, what's the procedure?

Thanks for any thoughts on this.

I don't know of any hard and fast rule but it seems sensible to include them if you want them to appear in the finished product. I'd format it the way you see it most often in those published books. If the publisher wants it a different way, they'll re-jig it.

Mary,

My latest book has a quote at the beginning of the first chapter. It was there when I sent the ms to the publisher. The quote is important in my opinion. It sets the tone or something.

The quotes are included in the manuscript in the place the author wants them. If you feel they need an explanation, a letter sent along with the manuscript will better enhance the reasoning to the publisher/agent.

Hope this helps Gloria! Best wishes on the manuscript.

Thanks for your input everyone. I still have another question. Are the quotes handled like the rest of the manuscript, i. e. double spaced with the same margins?

Hi Mary,

I believe you just write them there yourself to make sure they are included the way you want them to be.

I'd single-space the quotes and probably italicize them (esp. if submitting in TNR) in order to set them apart from the regular text.

PS to Cora: ;)

In my novel THE BUCKSELLER, snippets of dialogue without direct attribution precede each chapter. They are there to add local color and bits of info. They are germane to the story, but not entirely integrated. Much the same as the quotes from others that you are using. Here's how I formatted them in the ms.

1) smaller point size than the rest of the copy

2) block indent on left and right side

3) double space between lines

4) two double spaces to indicate change of speaker

In published form it looks very nice. The double space becomes single, and the double double space becomes one double space. The bits of dialogue are smaller looking and are set inside the normal margins.
