NOTE: a PA book is considered as self-published by most book-stores, agents and publishers.

Here is an article from this month's MWA Newsletter.

“SELF PUBLISHED WRITERS AND BOOKSTORES

In most stores, self-published authors are as welcome as telemarketers at dinnertime. Self-pubbed books require extra paperwork. These publishers give smaller discounts to the stores. Self-pubbed books can’t be returned.

Many chains cannot buy books from the author. This takes up precious time for less return—although the store may be too polite to say so. If a store does buy your self-published books, recognize this as a huge favor. Unfortunately, some self-published authors are rude and demanding, which makes life even more difficult for the others.

Many chain stores cannot give signings for self-published authors. If they do, it’s generally a table by the door with no newspaper notices, no pretty posters and no mention in the store calendar.

Most chains cannot stock self-published books. Some authors tried to get around this policy by ordering their own books, then not picking them up—in two or three hundred stores. These authors though this would force the stores to carry their work. Instead, some chains now require self-published books be paid for in advance, which makes them even more difficult to order.

Bookstores are not good venues for the self=published. You’re better off selling your book on the Internet, or at speeches, book fairs, library talks and other events.

If you want to eventually be traditionally published, do not go to the stores with your self-published book. When a conventional publisher buys your book, you want to come on the scene as a fresh new face.”

I realize this is not much new info. but just another testimonial regarding self-pub.

I personally think self-publishings place is in non-fiction only!

Please re-read the last sentence. I'm beginning to think this is more important that we want to recognize.
