I found a New York agent from the Writers Market in the early 80s. At least I THINK it was the Writers Market. I haven't used it since because it's too expensive and no library in the towns I lived had a copy.

The paying market(s) I've found are on the internet or through word of mouth.

With the advent of Google and writing help sites (such as Writer Beware and P&E), one has to wonder if it's worth the cost to buy one.

My last version? 1997, I believe.
Complete with an entry for one Erica House...

As with Laurel, most of the places I've heard of since are by word of mouth.

No WM book has ever helped me and I swore (after the fourth one) to never buy another one of those overpriced, overhyped books again. With Jeff Herman's manual it's the same thing too. In fact I've never heard another writer say these books helped them either. Most agents and publishers don't list themselves in them anyway because all they were getting was slush pile material. You can follow every guideline the WM books say but if you pay attention, it reads just like a big conference. Those books are too expensive for me to buy another one on false hopes. A lot of the people listed never even get the submissions. Search freely on the Internet or buy cheaper books that may actually help. WM sucks if you ask me. Just another case of someone preying on the false hopes of struggling writers by saying these books can get them in the door...please. The big folks in the industry don't even read Writers Market books even if WM wants to make you think so. Save your money and go with your instincts.

IT'S DEFINITELY NOT WORTH THE COST!

You can purchase a year of the on line book of Writers Market for only $29.99. I haven't purchased one of those others in years. I also use P&E a whole lot, as well as Todd I too use the internet.

I know that this is a little off the subject, but I was wondering if any of
you can suggest a few good publishing companies That I can sink my teeth into.

Publishing is a hidebound industry. In an age when all other trades have gone digital, the so-called good publishing houses still demand a hard copy manuscript delivered by snail mail, i.e. if they allow you to submit. Many publishers refuse to accept unsolicited manuscripts. As if that weren't enough, most think they are too good to deal directly with unknown writers and will only accept proposals from agents. If you're looking for a truly good publisher, I suggest an overseas publishing house - Britain would be my first choice - where they aren't so full of themselves.

Tyrone, welcome...
What kinds of books are you looking to place with these publishing companies?
That will help narrow down which ones to look at.

A good rule of thumb, though, is to go into a bookstore (especially into your specific genre), and look through the stacks. Figure out which publishers are stocked there, and then research them (Google is good). Ask them for a set of their standard submission guidelines. Then, submit exactly as they ask.

Todd, that's a great idea. I'll do just that. I'll also check out the internet to research some sites and other publishers. Thanks for the help.

IMHO, you've got to be crazy to think that you can find "up to date" information in ANY "paper" publishing guide. The internet has made WM and all the others obsolete. You can find any book or magazine publisher on the internet, as well as TONS of websites devoted wholly to listing individual publishers, (and agents too) for any specific genre. DON'T waste your money - especially the FIENDISHLY high price of WM - on any sort of publishing guide. Let's face it folks, in today's turbulent publishing environment, houses and mags are starting up and going under faster than ANY conventional guide can keep up with. If you do need a starting point, go to a B&N or Borders, bring a pencil and paper, and copy down any publishers and/or agents from something like Writer's Market that you think might be helpful. THEN, go on the internet and look them up. (If a publisher or agent doesn't have a website, then you don't want to be in business with them anyway.)
