To me this smacks as a rip-off because they accept up to 50,000 manuscripts.

they get 4.25 million in entry fees

I'm not a registered member at the NYT site so could not read the article. If it's the NYT sponsoring the prize, it seems odd. That means some of the same newspapers that refuse to review POD or self published books or small press books by unknown authors are sponsoring a contest with the results that they will publish a book? Sounds like an interesting article anyway.
