"novel writing software along with scriptwriting software are computer games for talentless people. They're a substitute for brains and imagination" This would lead me to believe you guys don't use knives and forks when you eat! How about, toliet tissue, an automobile, packaged meat from the grocer, synthetic materiel in clothing,an electric stove, a dishwasher (no, not your wife), or any other labor saving device. Did you ride a horse to school, five miles through the snow? Do you hate progress? Do you wish things were like they used to be? Jeeze, what a pair of old fuddy-duddies.

make it 3 Bill I've looked at the stuff - downloaded - installed and played with it. If you outline, create characters etc. - such tools could be helpful but if you are telling a story, geez it really gets in the way. by the way, I like my double-layer potty paper, I gave up sears-roebuck and corn shucks last year http://www.perrycomer.com http://throughablindeye.blogspot.com/

See, three old fuddies... Anti-progress. "We've always done it that way?" they cry as they compose their manuscripts with a quill, using a candle for light. No wait, they use computers!(Hemmingway would be so ashamed). Maybe there is hope for them after all.Maybe they don't really mean it! Maybe their lumbago is acting up today and they just feel ornery.

I used Final Draft for screenplays, simply because I'm too lazy to format them. It's just another word processing program. if you use Word (and you do), it's no different. I also use Stylewriter for editing. It has helped immeasurably to correct some basic flaws in my writing. I like it a lot. They are coming with a new addition in January 07 and I probably will get it. It's alleged to be designed specifically for fiction. |

Formatting programs are fine for screenplays, I've used one (Scriptware) for years (after formatting my own scripts for what seemed like forever). But how hard is it to format a novel? You sit down at a computer (or as some well-known writers do - a typewriter) and write. What I think is dumb are these programs that come up with ideas for stories, plot points, etc. That's probably why PA has so many kids who think they're writers. That comes second to the teachers who tell kids today that they can be anything they want to be, and still let them spell words like they sound without correcting them. http://stephenlodge.com Novels by Stephen Lodge: "Charley Sunday's Texas Outfit!" I totally agree, Steve. They think the programs will make them instant authors. Those are the ones Perry was referring to, I'm sure. As aids, some of them are okay, but they can never replace what's between your ears. |

That's why it can't be replaced. Nothing exists in a vacuum.
