Ever since I finished writing (over two years ago) Turn Left at September there has been something nagging at the back of my mind. I had put something in the book that was a thing very familiar to me, something that I, along with everyone in the Christian world grew up with. But there was something about it that didn't seem quite right.
Finally, I looked it up and guess what... I got it wrong. I made a mistake in the book and nobody seems to have noticed. It's a mistake that everybody on this forum should be aware of.
I had the bright idea of making a contest out of it; the first person to come up with the right answer might win a VISA gift card or something. In order to keep it on the up and up I'd probably have to lock the correct answer in Geraldo Rivera's vault prior to announcing the contest. I ran my idea past a mystery writer's internet forum with mixed reactions.
The biggest challenge would be getting the word out.
Any thoughts??? (I hope)

Sounds like a great idea to me, Dennis. As you said, though, the biggest problem is getting the word out--same as with all book promotion. But if you can reach enough people with the contest info, I'd expect them to be interested.

I think it's a wonderful idea. Reaching readers will be your main goal with this -- people who have read the book or would order the book to find the mysterious info and win a prize. It's a nice hook. Your website and blog would be a good starting place. And perhaps if you ask sweetly, other bloggers you know might help publicize your contest.

Dennis, maybe you could promote it at your signing. I think it would work well if you said everyone who finds the right answer to the mystery is entered into a drawing to be held on such and such date and what the winner will get. The chance at a visa giftcard would be a nice lure during the holidays.
"A mystery within a mystery". That is a nice catch.

Hi Dennis Collins:
This is very interesting to me concerning your book. Regardless on how you handle the mistake you have recognized. I have recently started putting video's of C. Gale Perkins Book Signing and T.V. Interview on Yahoo, Google, and Veoh as you can see on my web-site.
You can do this and also if you choose to you can incorporate a contest in the video that promotes your book. All you need to do is video tape your video using a camcorder and convert the video to MPEG and put it on one or all of the three places I mentioned.
On my web-site I offer to convert video tapes to MPEG for people that allow me to put the video/MPEG on one or all of the three places above under Erv's Book Advertiser and then link the video to your web-site. However if that should be a problem and you wish to do it all yourself and not have me put it on one or all of the three places under my Erv's Book Advertiser listing I would be more than willing to help you in any way I can.
