When I click on the old Winterwolfpublishing site logo (they went belly up the first of the year, owing its authors royalties) in the bottom left-hand corner of the Mindsightseries opening page--a new Winterwolfpublishing page opens. Is this Kevin's latest venture? If so, maybe he can pay what he promised in his author release contracts. Sounds like sour grapes? Sure is! |

William, Haven't a clue about the new site. Kevin hasn't been on here since well before he went out of business. Try the site and see what happens, and if you get through to him, maybe you can get everything straightened out. If you do, please let us know and come back and make a report here about it, so that we can all pass whatever happens on to those others interested. Claudia MINDSIGHT MODERATOR

William, I think that is a site that has nothing to do with Winterwolf or Kevin...it was the address at one time of Winterwolf, but no longer is. It is just a page offering a bunch of links to various other links regarding all sorts of things including airline tickets and credit reports. I think when a domain name or web address expires or is no longer in use, someone else can buy it and then they can do whatever they want. I have seen this several times with websites I tried to go to that are no longer active as the website they once were. Of course, this is just a guess on my part. I, too, have been trying to get in touch with Kevin Grover. DUNGAN BOOKS was financed on a shoestring, so I necessarily got by without some of the expensive software that other startup publishers can't seem to do without. Now that we have made it past the first year, I am looking to purchase the software at a discount, preferably from someone with all the digital bells and whistles who has gone belly up. I know it sounds ghoulish, but Kevin probably has no farther use for it and from the looks of things has some bills to pay. If anyone knows his whereabouts, please have him contact me, Fred Dungan, fdungan@fdungan.com. Kevin was a US Army armor NCO (he outranked me) and I doubt that he would be shirking his obligations if it weren't for inability to pay them due to the continued impoverished state of honest, hardworking independent publishers who have been squeezed to death by the unfair monopolistic practices of the hereditary leveraged distributorships (Ingram, Lightning, Bowkers, et al) that are notorious for keeping you and me from making a decent living. http://www.dunganbooks.com |

Fred, like all the Winterwolf authors, we had faith in Kevin. I even went as far as convincing a major Hallmark player in the Kansas City area to stock Winterwolf books for a period of six months and along with Larry Sager (another author) set up and stocked the display, coming back every week to take an accounting of sales. Unfortunately, the exprement failed to impress Hallmark and I had to pull the display. But books were sold, and not a royalty was paid that I'm aware of. We were all surprised and disappointed that not only were our efforts not paid off, but not a word from the publisher. Yes, he did shrink from his obligation. If he had explained that he could not pay roylaties as promised in the final contract, we would have understood--but he chose not to. |

Cut and run isn't exactly Kevin's style. Nonetheless, the evidence points in that direction. I can only request that you and the other authors involved withhold final judgment until the exact nature of the circumstances in which Winterwolf went under are known. I say this because I recently spent close to 2 years in a VA nursing home. For the most part I was so far out of it that I was in no way responsible for my actions; my family held my power of attorney. Give the man a chance. There is plenty of time and the amount of money at stake isn't going to make or break any of you. Should it turn out that the captain jumped ship, then you have my blessing to form a shore party, chase him down and hang him from the yardarm. http://www.dunganbooks.com |

Most all authors were aware of the family battle Kevin was struggling with and were sympathetic, supportive, and understanding. I for one, as well as those I know, do not hold him any ill wind. But to cut us off, then promise an accounting and disappear without a final word, surprised us all. What stuck in everyone's craw--was word that he opened another publishing business under another name. We found out because he offered one of the authors an opportunity to publish. What crossed all our minds was: If he had money to open another business, he had the money to pay the royalties promised. You're right, the money was negligible. It was the principle of the situation that mattered. Wherever he is, I wish him well. He made an effort--as we all did. |

I just received word from a most reliable source that the new publishing company of Kevin's that I mentioned earlier followed Winterwolf into the abyss. |

It really is way too bad in all of it's many forms, what happens to a lot of people who have dreams and try really hard to pursue them against all the odds. The small guy who wants to give authors a real break because he has knowledge of and abilities to work the internet, and then gets stopped by circumstances that prove to be beyond his control. I, for one, think that is what happened to Kevin. I am sure that there were many family matters that contributed to his agency demise, as well as pressures from his job and money problems that every person with a growing family can relate to every day of our lives. And then the commitments that he made to the authors seemed to pale in the cold clear light of defeat. For me, and I know that it is easy to say, as I didn't have a personal stake in his success, although I almost did, as he was going to re-publish Notes, I wish him the best and hope that he comes back and eventually makes his dreams of a going, profiting agency a huge success in the coming future. He really did try hard and wanted with utmost sincerity that every author that he housed have the biggest success possible. That, I firmly believe. It really is a shame......... Thus, Winterwolf goes under while PublishAmerica continues to flourish. Is there no justice? Possibly not, but I do take comfort in Atlanta Nights . . . http://www.dunganbooks.com

The best hope is that Lulu will put PA out of business. It only takes half a brain to realize that of the two Lulu is a better choice. http://www.perrycomer.com http://throughablindeye.blogspot.com/
