Jan, or those of you who are a bit well versed with publishing -- can you describe what an item writer does at a publishing house? There's a potential opportunity for me, although I am not free to elaborate at this time...sorry. I need words of wisdom from those who are a bit more experienced with publishing than I am.

Curious, of course! You may e-mail me privately or discuss here.

Thanks!

not a clue, but I'll ask my sister who used to work as an Editor for Sunset Publishing, maybe she'll know.

Here's her answer with some links she found about it:

Hi Nancy:

Well, until a few minutes ago, no, I didn’t know what an item writer is. I did some searching on the Internet and discovered that an item writer is a person who writes test questions for exams dealing with licensing and certification for specific kinds of work. If you go to the first link above, you’ll find a manual explaining how to write “items,” which are clearly exam questions. The second link is for a workshop that teaches people how to write items, again, all exam questions for certifying people in some technical or medical specialty. I went to several links and from them I learned that an item writer is not the same as a college exam writer. All of the sites deal with exams for licensing or certification, not college work.

How did I miss your question? I am so sorry...as the post I DID make this morning shows, I can think (or spell or type) too clearly early in the morning. I see Nancy Marie handled your question just ducky. I would have had to look it up since the children's writers I know who write this stuff don't seem to be called "item writers" when they do testing material for McGraw-Hill and others. I guess is it another example of how children's writing and adult writing differ -- even in jargon. Since they are using the "item writer" term, I assume this is for some kind of adult testing material?

I know a number of folks who do this kind of writing (though for kid tests) and it can be EXTREMELY lucrative. Sounds like a good opportunity.

Jan

I think it's a good opportunity too. The bizarre twist to this is I cannot locate when I sent my information to them. Nevertheless, I sent the requested info this morning.

I'll keep all of you posted. After I posted this question last night I searched on the Net finding stuff. It is something I am certain I could do.

At least, I hope!:)
