Two comments from a write up the AP wire article - 2007

"I try to write my books so the reader can't put them down," he explained in a 1982 interview. "I try to construct them so when the reader gets to the end of a chapter, he or she has to read just one more chapter. It's the technique of the old Saturday afternoon serial: leave the guy hanging on the edge of the cliff at the end of the chapter."

"Then I do a complete rewrite- 12 to 15 times," he said. "I spend a whole year rewriting."

((Could this be the reason so many manuscripts never get past an editor? By the time two re-writes are done I'm so sick of it, I want to throw it away.))

Could be.
Sheldon lived here in the Palm Springs area where I live. I never saw him down here, but I did run into him several times back in the early '60s when he was producing "I Dream of Jeannie" on the Columbia lot when I was delivering mail.

I think I'm on about 6 or 7 on FID (complete rewrites...not the partially-through-turn-around-and-go-back-to-rewrite times).

I think I've had about 2-3 just since I finished the "final" draft.

At a conference a couple of years ago I sat next to best selling author Jeremiah Healy at dinner and we got into a discussion on rewrites. He said that he rewrites portions of every one of his novels at least twenty-five times before he's satisfied. And this is a guy with a Harvard degree!
