I have re-entered the fray (I always thought it was spelled frey when it meant quarrel or fight.). I am once again actively trying to find an agent for my next book.

I've decided to try a new tactic this time. The first agent that I have queried is an African-American woman named Sha-Shanna Crichton. She is a highly educated lady with a track record of sales to publishers like Kensington and Pocketbooks. A friend has told me that in addition to all mainstream mysteries she likes to handle work with ties to the Afro-American experience.

I write about Detroit and you can't paint an accurate picture of that city without recognizing the racial diversity. My primary protagonist is Otis Springfield a black detective leiutenant. Just maybe an agent with some pride in her heritage might be willing to take a closer look.

Good luck, Dennis.

The only other thing I could suggest is giving Otis (or some other main character) a disability. Think: a minority character with some kind of limiting disability that he overcomes...might be worth a thought.

Any upcoming conference plans? I'm headed for Mayhem in the Midlands the end of May.

I'm doing some local things: a reading/presentation in mid-Michigan next Wednesday and then a small conference (which I actually get paid for) in Sarnia, Ontario the second Saturday in May. There's a book fair in Ann Arbor later in May but it's not genre specific and kinda pricey. I might just pop in for a look and see if it's worth the investment for next year.

I'm scheduled for my (hopefully)next to last cancer checkup in mid-May and after that it should be nothing more than annual blood tests. I've been radioactive for five months now and it still creates a few annoying health "issues."

As for my protagonist; I've put poor Otis through too many things in this story. Giving him any sort of handicap would be way over the top. He gets promoted and his first case is a multiple cop murder, his mother dies in the middle of the investigation, he finally discovers the story of the father he never knew, and somebody tries to blow him away with a shotgun. Oh yeah and he gets rocked pretty hard in an explosion at the end. I think that giving him a wooden leg would be a bit much.
