When I wrote my first (The Unreal McCoy) novel I decided to build it around a different kind of private investigator. Guys like Mike Hammer and Amos Walker seemed like they were born tough and rugged. They could out-drink, out-fight, and out-wiscrack anybody on the street.
So I created Michael O'Conner a rookie PI, a guy born into a normal family with no combat skills and who prefers Mountain Dew and video games to barroom brawls. A guy this innocent and ill prepared would need a mentor to help him survive so I produced Detective Albert McCoy to be his seasoned guardian angel. Then, as kind of an afterthought, I added a sidekick for McCoy. I called him Detective Otis Springfield and he provided calm logic and stability to balance McCoy's impulsiveness and occaisonal impatience.
In the second book (Turn Left at September) I allowed McCoy to step into the spotlight a little bit and gave him a love interest. He did very well.
But now that I've written the third episode (The First Domino) I see that Otis Springfield's quiet strength has moved him to the forefront and he appears to have emerged as the strongest character.
So what started out to be a series chronicling the coming of age of a burgeoning private eye seems to have morphed into what may become a series featuring Otis Springfield.
Any of you guys ever have one of your characters elbow his way into the front row when you weren't looking?

So far, that hasn't happened. What has happened has been the evolution of the main character into a stronger more complex person.
I have written or almost completed three books with a pastor as the central character. What I am considering is to re-write each book and incorporate all the elements of the character but the characters will continue with their different names. The books are not a series and can't be made into one.

I've had secondary characters who end up stealing the show. That's about as close as I've come to your situation.

As kind of a sidenote I've read Mike Manno's book twice, once when it was a PA book titled "The Deadly Habit," and again as a Five Star offering called "Death in Holy Orders," and a young lady named Buffy certainly grew up behind Mike's back when he was busy re-writing.

I've had many, many people tell me their favorite character in TRUE BLUE FOREVER is Billy Joe DuBose, the curly-haired, wisecracking best friend of my heroine. Since he is based on my curly-haired, wisecracking son, I don't really mind.
