I found this site that detects if an author is male or female.

It worked for me. Have a go! You need about 500 words or more, and fill in the genre.

GenderGenie

It looks like men prefer to use different words than woman.

I wonder if it works for you to?

It worked on me as well, Harry. My sample was 631 words, the feminine score was 755 and the masculine score was 697. I don't know if it means anything or not, but I was kind of glad the two scores were fairly close.

I love it! I submitted a long piece of dialogue supposedly coming from my female protagonist's lips. The program said it was written by a female. Now I know I'm right on with my female dialogue.

The genie says I am female, 500 to 445. Must be my sensitive side. And the essay I submitted was about Sports (on my web site).

Well........ I submitted a part of a dissertation that I wrote about my dealings with PA to this Gender Genie and it came back with this:

Words: 1191

(NOTE: The genie works best on texts of more than 500 words.)

Female Score: 1391
Male Score: 1485

The Gender Genie thinks the author of this passage is: male!

So, what do you make of that????? And I wonder about how much of me, or what that shows in my writing? Or does it just show that in that particular piece I was trying to be as strong as humanly possible and my words reflected that part of my personality that make me stronger in spirit??

"Now I know I'm right on with my female dialogue."

That comes from wearing your wife's underwear when you write.

Now let's see....these would indicate that I'm more feminine than Claudia, and about on a par with Joyce. I'm shocked!

I kind of think that the more they have to evaluate of your writing the more the score is, note my submission was over 1100 words and most of the rest of yours were around the 700 words mark, however, my female score is only less than 100 points less than the male score and the same would be true on the reverse for Joyce's scores if here submission were longer and although Stephen didn't tell us the score on his, I would assume (?maybe assuming makes me an ass, but what else is a person to do?) that his score was most probably in the same range, and I noted that the words that they used were "the, and, me, she, was, when, it, with, to, he," range of words that a man might use more than a woman. What it all comes from, I haven't a clue, and how they came upon judging those particular words as being masculine instead of feminine, I don't understand either.

Maybe I should write under a male pen name, and then I would garner more stolid and loyal readers??

And then for the rest of the story, I just submitted a portion of the intro on my book, Notes from Nobody, and here is what came back:

Words: 1040

(NOTE: The genie works best on texts of more than 500 words.)

Female Score: 1541
Male Score: 1262

The Gender Genie thinks the author of this passage is: female!

WIERD!!!! WIERD!!! just slightly less than a 300 score difference and definitely FEMALE...... and many of the same sorts of words are highlighted but included more "at, was, many be, who and with" type words. Very interesting.......

Tom, I would guess that you have been living a lie as I too, have been..... It seems that I am BI (female & male) and you are female and Joyce is female and Stephen is female.... so the only one true to her calling is Joyce here. Could it possibly be that we write to suit the needs of the reason we are writing and that determines the gender identity for the piece.

For instance, the book I wrote, Notes from Nobody, is told from strictly my perspective and point of view, so it would seem totally natural that it come out totally female, and the dissertation I wrote about my dealing with PA was going to be forwarded to an Attorney and therefore I was being as strong and persistent and intelligent as I could come across for the purpose of a possible lawsuit. Steven said that he was trying to write a story as a woman would, and therefore he was doing what he thought would go through a woman's brain. You write for a softer audience and therefore whatever you write would naturally have a softer bent, as to not inflame anyone, therefore a more female slant.

In other words, we put what we want others to perceive us to be in our soul when we write and then it comes out to be that personality. Or we immerse ourselves into and morph to be what we want others to read into the story.

Either that, or the Genie is full of crap. Words can be useful clues, though. When I see a real estate ad describing a property as "cute, darling, adorable" etc., I figure the copywriter was either a woman, or a devious man pitching it to women.

This time I submitted a long piece of dialogue from my male protagonist, and I still came up "female". Something's wrong with this genie thing, unless there's something I don't know about myself. Well, enough said about that. Now it's back to the closet.

One thing we're missing. Just on the flip of a coin, the genie has a 50-50 chance of being right (or wrong). From our results, that's about his score.

I'd vote for the fullacrap option.
I looked through the words they specify as masculine and feminine, and couldn't figure out how they made distinctions on the words they use...

Indeed, judging by the results they need to tweek their programming.

I suppose the statistical link between the preference for certain words and gender is too weak?
