What if you went to a POD like Lulu and produced a copy of your book and instead of sending queries, synopsis and the like just sent the book to editors and agents?

I think they'd probably wonder why you did it that way, when they specifically ask for loose-leaf submissions, queries, synopses, and such...and then summarily reject your submission.

But of course, it depends on the agent or editor.

First the first time in the history of publishing it is possible for an author to present a "finished" product to a publisher. Cover, artwork and the formatted manuscript. I would think that would be a plus -- unless the publisher was stuck in the past.

It's good you put "finished" in quotes, Pac, because what you describe is a stretch. Pretend you're the publisher and receive a work in Lulu form. Wouldn't your first question likely be, "So what do you need us for?" Obviously, your need for them would be in marketing and distribution. But what if that book was in need of severe editing both thematically and line-by-line? Double-spacing on an 8 x 10 bright white sheet of paper allows that; your book wouldn't. As for the cover artwork, wouldn't it suggest to you that the author of the book is also knowledgeable about both art and what moves readers to a cover? The fact is, that's probably not the case. (I say this, having read that many authors hate the covers the publishers give to their book.) I once shopped around a children's story. It needed to be illustrated. But I learned early on that, unless you were both author and illustrator, you did not supply your manuscript with the illustrations by another. That's because the publisher most likely has a much better idea of quality illustration and what in your story would best be illustrated to assist your story and its success with a reader.

The other thing not to be overlooked is that the writing alone�not fonts, spacing, covers, etc�should make the first impression to an editor and publisher.

I agree with Frank and Todd.

I'm afraid that most publishers would toss it aside Perry.
It is not how they would like to see a manuscript arrive. And considering the slushpiles most publishers have to deal with...
