Just got a chance to read this, Nancy. Great interview.
Your mention of the English teacher who accused you of plagiarism touched a nerve with me. In my senior Creative Writing class, our final exam was to write 1)a three-act play 2)a collection of 20 poems or 3) two short stories. I was the only one who chose the short stories. I wrote one that was along the lines of a Sweet Valley High story--teenage fluff. The other was a dark and daring tale featuring a girl in an abandoned cabin in the woods whose poignant insanity is revealed slowly over the course of the story. My teacher loved the fluff piece, but she hated the other and gave me a "C" on it. (The only "C" this valedictorian ever made in her life!) Her comments were that it didn't follow traditional writing methods, and she thought I could have done better. Well, that story ("Midsummer Shower" posted on my pages at AuthorsDen) was published last year in A Literary Bent. The other one never even made it out of a drawer!
