I saw this today and thought you all would get a kick out of it:

A writer died, and due to a bureaucratic snafu in the hereafter, she
was to be allowed to choose her own fate: heaven or hell for all
eternity. Being very shrewd for a dead person, she asked St. Peter
for a tour of both.

The first stop was hell, where she saw rows and rows of writers
sitting chained to desks, in a room as hot as a thousand suns. Fire
licked the writers' fingers as they tried to work; demons whipped
their backs with chains. Your typical hell scene.

"Wow, this is awful," said the writer., appalled "Let's see some
heaven."

In a moment, they were whisked to heaven and the writer saw rows and
rows of writers chained to desks, in a room as hot as a thousand
suns. Fire licked the writers' fingers as they tried to work; demons
whipped their backs with chains. It looked and smelled even worse
than hell.

"What gives, Pete?" the writer asked. "This is worse than hell!"

"Yes," St. Peter replied, "but here you get published."

Oh no! You know what you're suggesting, don't you...? And that would mean that he's Him.

Yes, even in Heaven you must struggle, but it is worth it because you now know that your work has a chance of being published. I would sooner pick that than the Hell on Earth, non-competitive system that won't accept a submission from anyone who doesn't have an agent. As far as I am concerned, those arrogant New York publishing industry executives can go to hell and stay there. And that goes double for the gougers at Bowker's.

The writers in heaven will not be published by PA I take it?

Never sure who's getting what on the Net. Especially when it's humor. Re my post above responding with humor to Nancy's joke: PA is heaven for writers, and Willem is God. Funny, yes? Funny, no?

Humor is a safety valve that helps to relieve the pain of living. The joke is that heaven for writers these days isn't that much different from hell. What makes it funny is that we recognize that the joke contains an element of truth. The publishing industry is notoriously corrupt and most writers aren't going to get diddly squat no matter what they do. We figure we cannot do anything about it, so we laugh it off. It is either that or cry and nobody likes a whiner, do they?

Yes, once you accept the premise that you can't counter corruption, you have no choice other than to laugh. Laugh it up, because the joke is on you. You have free will and you could do something about it. Frank says "Willem (sic) is God." Bullshit. Wilem puts his pants on the same way that you do. I suspect that Wilem is acutely aware of his mortality and very much would like for you to keep laughing because when the victims stop laughing and band together the predators become the prey.

I have faith in God Almighty. My God is omnipotent, omniscient and omnipresent. Wilem can flee to Spain, Iceland, Holland, or Maryland, but there is no escape from righteous indignation, i.e. God's wrath. I believe that any writer with talent who struggles hard to get ahead will ultimately triumph over corruption and evil. We learn from our mistakes. Yes, Wilem burned me, but I won't let him get away with it. Writing is my chosen profession. I can be obstructed by the powers that be, but I cannot be stopped.

I have seen too many criminals getting away with their crimes Fred. I hope that at least one day they realize what misery they have caused. But still there are many who simply laugh at their victims.

I don't care too much about revenge, I think it is more important to keep warning others.

So much for a joke. I wish I could cartoon. Nancy's joke spawns many funny scenes.

And Fred, before you "sic"-ed me on the spelling of Willem, did you as an editor bother to check your own spelling first. A 5-second Google search or look at the PA website will tell you you had no business correcting my spelling. I've no problem with others pointing out mistakes in my writing, just so long as they spend some time looking for their own.

My mistake. You are right, Frank. The correct spelling is Willem.

Harry, you are confusing restitution with revenge.

I think it was funny Nancy. We were all a bit too serious perhaps.

And perhaps there are masochistic writers among us who are just jealous that they are not chained and whipped?

I don't want to put a damper on anyone's fun, but for some of us writing is a job and not just a hobby. A good writer has to know the how and why of things. Earlier in this thread Harry asked what is humor these days. He must have meant it as a rhetorical question. I thought he actually wanted to know.

When I come here, I am usually looking for tips on writing -- the finer points that you can only get by discussing the hows and whys with other writers. If this was the Mead Hall, I would have realized it was all just fun and games.
