Just out of curiosity, I'm wondering how many folks here on the boards set goals for their writing.

I personally set monthly and weekly goals. I've thought about implementing daily goals (which have been implied in the past, since I need to meet the weekly variety).

Anyone else set writing goals? Tell us about them...

I don't set goals concerning time. If I have time I write, but often all kind of things happen to prevent that. In that case setting goals would become frustrating.

A few years ago I had an accident that prevented me from working for a few weeks. Now THAT was great for my writing, although it did hurt a bit and I could not type very fast. I wrote most of my novel in those few weeks and the rest took years!

It is not a method I recommend though.

I do set goals for quality. When I think the manuscript is OK I place adds for test readers. Such people are complete strangers to me and to each-other. The reports I get back I use to improve the writing. If I see the same remark twice or more I know for sure I need to fix it. If only one reader makes a certain comment I will need to ponder about it.

I had one reader that complained about the excessive sex in my work, but from my point of view only 2 or 3 pages out of 270 were slightly erotic. The teacher of my 12 year old son also read the manuscript and thought it would be suitable for her pupils. Weighing these two remarks made me decide to leave all the 'sex' in. Perhaps that particular reader had some kind of a personal problem. (Although that teacher might be a nymphomaniac perhaps, it suddenly occurs to me...)

As we all know it is hard to see the flaws in your own writing, and this method helps me to get a clear view of the problems. If I manage to solve them correctly is another problem.

I set goals and then can't start the process of reaching them. I've had a book waiting to be started for a year or more. The research is well under way, the beginning of a framework written, but that's as far as I've progressed.

About the time I think, "THIS week I'll resume in earnest." ten review books come in, or a dozen things require focus at work and another week or three passes without progress.

I'd love to get back in the writing routine. Just can't seem to do that. The best technique would be simply start and let the book take over, but now that I have a job again, that doesn't seem like a wise idea to me.

Setting goals is of utmost importance in order to insure a sense of ongoing frustration.

I just try to get things done. And that works for me.

I pick which projects take priority for the week and just try to work on them every day.

I need to be able to "lose" myself to write and I can't seem to do that because now days I have to find myself again so that I can go to work the next morning. Those days when I could just write the entire time the kids were in school, or stay up all night and just do my thing are long gone and the real world has taken over. So, now my goal is to write another book one day and maybe get another one published at some point in time.
