A few weeks ago on Law & Order: Criminal Intent, Detective Goren went undercover as a prisoner to learn firsthand how noncompliant inmates were being restrained and denied water for hours on end. Last night Detective Olivia Benson, Law & Order: SVU, went undercover as a prisoner to learn the identity of a corrections officer who was abusing woman, even murdering one. In both instances I was reminded of a story I watched a long, long time ago; and I wonder if any other old timers here remember it.

A reporter, writing about the death penalty and the electric chair, decided his opinion would mean more if he underwent being a prisoner himself on Death Row. So arrangements were made and he was incarcerated and was to be treated as an inmate awaiting execution. After a time, he starts to worry as he hasn’t seen the slightest indication from the warden, the guard, or anyone that he really hasn’t been convicted of murder. His anxiety continues to worsen and on the day of his scheduled execution, he loses it and screams that he is a reporter, not a murderer, and that something has gone wrong, and they need to check with his editor. But he is ignored and strapped into the chair. By now he is almost out of his mind. Still no one listens to his plea, and there are witnesses on the other side of the observation glass, watching his last moments. A hood is placed over his head while he continues to scream and struggle. Finally, the switch is pulled. Nothing happens, except that the charade is over and the warden, guards, and witness all grin and smile. When they remove the hood from the reporter and we see his face, it is clear he is dead. He died from fright.

Anyone remember that episode and of which television program it was a part?

Sounds like twilight Zone or Alfred Hitchcock or one of those shows that featured frightening twists on reality. I don't remember seeing that one particular segment.

"Amazing Stories" maybe? It sounds familiar, but I don't remember what show it was.

BTW, I love the "Law & Order" shows.
