Having just recently managed to get rights to my first novel back from PA, I am looking to place it with a new publisher.

First Books handled my second novel and the difference working with them vs. PA has been like night and day. The folks at First Books have been courteous, reasonable, professional from the start. But like most PODs they do not sell on a returnable basis.

Since I have a few good reviews for my first novel I'd really like to get quotes on the cover and get it in stores. I am under the impression that, other than for local bookshops where I can make consignment arrangements, that means selling on a returnable basis.

I have found a place that will make returnable sales, but it is through Baker and Taylor only -- not Ingrams. My question is how much will that hurt?

Any advice is welcome.

Thanks,
David

P.S. For background:

second novel Business as Usual

Hello David. I checked out your websites and read about your books. Most impressive.

I'm not sure what you are asking. I will focus on your publisher statement and the Ingrams question.

My first book was published through PA and is still with them. My second book, like yours, was published by 1stBooks. I chose 1stBooks because of the author friendly contract and royalties. I also found 1stBooks to be helpful and considerate, but had the same set of problems as with my first book: no returns, and a general lack of interest in acknowledging POD or "self published" book.

Two months after my second book was released, another publisher expressed interest in releasing it as a second edition. As promised, 1stBooks released me from my contract and my book is now through Dandelion Books.

Dandelion is a POD press. They do not distribute through Ingrams. They DO accept returns but ONLY if the book store does not rip the covers off the returned books and still expect a 100% return on their money. Dandelion has treated me with the utmost respect as an author and person. However, their shunning of the Ingrams connection causes some difficulty on amazon. Dandelon uses Booksurge Direct, not Ingrams or Baker and Taylor.

That is my experience. We have two publishers on this board who may be able to advise you better than I have.

Ingram is the biggest, but Baker&Taylor is the second biggest. They wouldn't be the second biggest if they had a problem getting books into stores. I haven't dealt with them so I can't really answer your question too well. Do a search for their other titles and see if they're listed on Amazon, B&N, etc.

Laurel, does Dandelion do the Advantage program (or whatever it's called. I can't remember off the top of my head) on Amazon? If so, what sort of problems have they been having?

Baker & Taylor is a Major book reseller.

Competitor of Ingram Book Group.

I can't imagine that the difference is too great so far as book buying is concerned, though if I was a bookstore, I might prefer to purchase the bulk of my books via the same wholesale venue...

Don't know if that helps too much.

Best of luck to you, David.

Keep this in mind also...

Amazon does not buy from Ingram. They buy directly from the printer...in most cases. Which is why the sales numbers reflected by Ingram doesn't reflect the Amazon sales (for reference, I direct you to my last royalty period when Ingram reports me as having 157 in sales for my second novel...and the total was near 400).

Thanks for all the helpful responses.

I'll add Dandelion to my list of possibilities (www.DandelionBooks.net).

The one I had in mind was Bookman Publishing (www.BookmanMarketing.com). Note they also will market books they don't publish inclduing POD. I just contracted with them to market my second novel, way too early to determine if they will be successful.
