INTERNET BANNER ADS Creation of a banner ad for internet sites is quite easy. Buying space can be expensive, but get contacts and swap them off. Various places will advertise for free. A few places will let you post a banner if you buy a book of theirs. Acquaint yourself with various outlets online where folks talk books or of the subject matter you wrote about.

I may need to research more into that one... I have a banner ad that I created, and posted it to my site...but it would be nice to find other places to put it... |

EZINE CLIPS If one knows plenty of ezine editors, getting an excerpt of the book online for a month or so is great promo. NET-MESSAGE BOARDS Establishing yourself in advance on various internet message boards is good. Then, when you post you have a book coming out; folks will at least look at it. It one SPAMS every board at once, you will be ignored. Many relationships can be built via this method.

MONTHLY E-MAIL NEWSLETTERS Very time-consuming, and may require some capital expenditure depending on the complexity of the newsletter. However, a good newsletter can be a helpful tool, and is easy for a subscriber to ship off to others in their address book. Can also be used to help build relationships with other authors, if used to help promote their works. |

Well, just making some suggestions folks. I welcome any and all ideas to add to the mix. I am sure many of these are posted on the site someplace, but I wager, compounding them is not a bad idea. |

PERSONAL EMAIL LIST Ads for the book can be sent to the folks in your email address book. The folks you send jokes to and pals you write will also be interested if you write a book. Some folks have a YAHOO list as well, but that is personal choice. REVIEW SITES Submit E-version of book to review sites. Some may buy one. Work with pub on sending books to these folks.

I would suppose that would depend on the church and the subject matter. Since two different churches did everything save for burn me in effigy for my first Dack Shannon book (containing nothing more racy than an episode of LAW & ORDER CI) simply because they were worried it would make them LOOK BAD (because my wife taught at their school) I doubt that is a venue for me. BTW, my wife has a much better job now.

I sold a few to church members, and it was enjoyed by a few of those... The median age of our congregation, I believe is somewhere around 65, if that gives any indication... The folks at my church have this thing against all the L&O shows...I still watch them...heh... And of course, I'll be getting a copy of Bulletproof Soul... |

L&O as in Law and Order? What do they have against that? I swear, I have been in church my whole life and every once in a while, I hear something so stupid that I can't help but think "no wonder so many people are turned off by us". Anyway, not saying your church people are stupid. Just some of the reasons against shows...

My mother had a bunch of people from her church order some copies of my book, and after she read it, she didn't stop yelling at me for a month. They were all mortified. |

Well, I don;t wanna get off on a tangent here...but.... my wife taught at a Christian school...not of our faith (Lutherans) but of one of them metal churches, ya know the kind. Well, trust me, I am all for Jesus and the Bible. These guys had me as the biggest evil SOB because of a ceremony I mentioned in a tale in NOCTURNAL VACATIONS. They were appalled by the language...the suggested sex (nothing is unleashed or squirted in the book) not realizing it the the religious paradox that makes Dack such a fascinating killer...anyway...I was blackmailed into not promotign my book or my wife would lose her job. I was jsut recovering from being laid off and they really knew how to hit. I doubt Jesus would agree with such a blackmail strat. Anyway, my wife has a great job as assit flight director at the CHALLENGER learning center in central IL and everything is fine. Soem folks could not believe that I woudl be abel to write about such thing sif I never did them. I pointed out that Edgar Rice Burroughs never dropped babies into the Congo to see if Tarzan woudl work. I also pointed out that the BIBLE has more paganism, sodomy, murder, lust etc than anythgin I could write. ah well. Mind you, the experience of having the school leader tell me how I wrote the book and put in filthy satanic stuff to sensationalize it...was interesting. Dang, I don't recall that at all... That said, while my stories are violent, they are not cyber punk silly violent. It is nothing so stupid it is out of the realm of reason. THEY ARE STORIES. but.... PROMOS ON BULLETIN BOARDS CHURCH OR OTHERWISE MAY WORK.

Some people just don't understand how to separate fact from fiction... the only complaint I had from folks at my church was that I used the word "whore" as a slander one character used against another (who happened to have said profession previously)...it just wouldn't have had the same kick if she'd called her a prostitute... A cousin of mine put it the best way...when you hear people say things you don't want to believe, just nod and smile...and do your own thing anyway... |

I have to agree, the Bible has a lot of interesting stuff in it... including, but not limited to: drunkeness and incest (Lot and his daughters) slavery (500 years in Egypt) murderous adultery (David sends a man to the front to have him killed to take his wife) demon possession (various tales during the time of Jesus) sorcerers and witches, along with curses (Paul and Barnabas, Acts 13) mob murder (a number of incidents where folks were stoned or killed by mobs) resurrection (Lazarus) oh well...I suppose some folks just need something to fight against... |

Well, I was almost blackmailed into writing stuff I didn't want to, but that is all into the past. I wager if God gave me a talent or ability, he didn;t say HERE SATAN HAVE AT HIM whew done with him.... In my unpublished historical fant epic St. Paul and others are treated pretty fair. They come aoff as pretty sane compared to the Romans, Celts, barbarians, Armenians, and frost giants...but that is another story |

back to PROMO stuff FRIENDS ACROSS THE COUNTRY CANNOT HURT If one has an online pal or buddy afar off, it can never hurt in an exetreme situation. This is NOT the norm, mind you, but it has happened to me a few times in the past week. Case in point: A couple people (one works at a B&N) have offered for to get their local B&N or BORDERS to carry BULLETPROOF SOUL since I sent them info on it, ISBN etc. I am not advising you to be a plague to online pals, or family, but if you have a good connection that offers or will do such a thing, it is not a bad option.

NEWSPAPER ADS Some places have cheap or free spots of advertising. Use them. Depending on budgets, an ad here or there in a newspaper is not a bad idea. There are new sectors in papers for website urls. Just getting this in is good. Many papers will do a local curiosity tale. AUTHORS DEN This website is good for self promoting and having a book listed. They have rotating covers etc and great spots to put up things concerning the book. Though since they started to charge, I msut confess I have not used this outlet.

BRICK AND MORTAR STORES Aside from contact methods found in a database online (email, phone # or mailing addys) pressing the flesh in a place like B&N or BORDERS is a great idea. Look professional; carry a leather briefcase; have a folder with a press release, reviews, business card and brochure…and a copy of the BOOK to hock. USED BOOK SHOPS I have found that a few of these places will sponsor a book. They take donated ones even better. I dropped 2 used copies of my old book in one in a college town and they vanished in a week. The owner asked me for a few more since one of the buyer’s buddies came in to look for one. Consignment at these spots is a must.

Last summer I had the title of my book "The O'Brien Series" and where to get it painted on a demo derby car... the car came in second place. Next summer I'm having all my titles painted on to a car. It seems to be good PR, if you enjoy demo derbies, give it a try... Talk to ya... Brian T. |
