Something I forgot to mention...

One thing bothers me a little bit about Treble Heart Books.

Owner Lee Emory does not approve of the business ethics of Amazon.com and so she does not pay to have THB books listed there. Apparently, Amazon runs a listing anyway and when somebody tries to order, they report that the title is out of print.

If all of this is true, then Amazon is clearly the bad guy. But the rest of the world will never know that.

Todd, if you'd like more detailed information, you can email the CEO at leeemory@earthlink.net I'm sure that she could give you the straight scoop.

The bad guy at this year's conference was Passive Voice! I've heard people say that you should never write in passive voice but for some reason, there was a lot of buzz about it at this conference. Perhaps it's just the latest editor's torch to carry. I dunno. Seems to me that everybody slips into passive voice now and then. What's the big deal?

Yes, the passive voice Queen is holding her hand up in the corner, squeaking "Guilty." Lolly lapses into that for some reason.

Lee Emory is not the only one who refuses to play the amazon game. It is unfortunate, perhaps, but the CEO of Dandelion Books is fighting the same battle. And I received an email from amazon upholding that practice so I know Lee and my publisher are not blowing smoke.

Amazon will not deal with any distributors but Ingrams and Baker and Taylor. Anyone with a different distributor must pay a hefty fee to be posted --- IF they get posted at all. the ball is in amazon's court and they make no apologies. The email I received from amazon was quite brusque, arrogant, and to the point. They essentially said LIKE IT OR LUMP IT SO THERE TOO.

The out of print edition of The Alley of wishes in on Amazon but despite frequent requests and legal hagglings, the Dandelion Books version is not posted. And frankly, I doubt it ever will be.

Thanks for the info, Dennis.

Feeling mighty small all of a sudden...

I sent three chapters to Tor/Forge books this morning and then sent off the full manuscript via priority mail, headed for the Dystel&Goderich agency in New York.

I was feeling pretty giddy about getting an invitation from a major New York agency but today, I read their client list:

First of all, there was the guy who played Trapper John on the TV M*A*S*H series. And then there's Richard Dreyfuss, Valerie Harper, Judge Judy, and about a half dozen Pulitzer Prize winners, not to mention a double handful of heavily credentialed leading-in-their-field experts.

What would they want with a little piss ant like me?

On the bright side, For Thine is the Power is now finished. Needs a little housekeeping and then it's ready to pitch to somebody.

Wings has also refused to play the Amazon game - when amazon asks for as much as 40% of the retail it is easy to see why. The word I got from Wings was that if they went with Amazon their prices would be about what PA charges. So, the real bad guy working against authors and small print houses is Amazon.

Ummmm...is this just me?
"...Amazon asks for as much as 40% of retail..."
but honestly, that's the same as brick and mortar stores...40%
the distributors who supply the books from the publishers normally take 55%...

At least those were the numbers I was being told (by other sources)...

I may do that, Dennis...but it will be a while before I even get close to finishing something worth putting up for the proposition of publication...

I wonder how Amazon can state a book out of print when it is simply 'not available'...strange...

Congrats on the agent/agency invite, Dennis...

Still- if your book is NOT on Amazon-how does anyone find it? I turned down a contract with Wings Press due to this...even with all their faults, everyone expects to be able to find a title on Amazon (especially when book stores might not have your book!) so has anyone gone with Wings and if so, how are people finding your book (without you telling them...?) Not that anyone finds PA books, Amazon or no, but at least they are on there...

Just wondering about this; I know some of the smaller presses are saying "no" to amazon, but doesn't this hurt the writer, in the long run?

Wings works with several other online book sellers.
I think in time Amazon is going to become more like E-bay and books will drop to a sideline. Also, other sites are going to grow and take away a lot of Amazon business.

It is very discouraging not to have a book on amazon when 95% of my sales always came from there. But who knew? Live and learn is what I keep doing.

I am pretty sure Amazon wants a 55% discount of retail on all books they carry (when you are being listed as a publisher, that is), not 40%. I do not know what B&N expects. I hope it is more around the 40% figure, as that is what I am looking for.

I got the impression that Amazon charges an up front fee to publisher's for the privilege of listing thier titles.

I can't speak for the book selling industry but muscle tactics are not uncommon in any business. I've heard a few war stories about the Coca-Cola / Pepsi skirmishes that are played out on grocer's shelves.

But like Connie, I want my book to be available WHEREVER BOOKS ARE SOLD. And if Amazon and some publishers are feuding it hurts because Amazon IS a major force in internet book selling.

It's a dilemma. It's not my fight, but if I'm with a publisher who boycott's Amazon, I'm sure as hell affected by it.

In an email from amazon and in an interview I did with one of their PR guys, I was told the only publishers who get a big discount on amazon are those with books listed in the Nyt best seller list. Those listings are heavily discounted. Whether that practice has changed, I don't know.}

A while back, I logged on to Amazon and discovered Bushwhacked was being discounted more than 50 percent. I placed a large order and received an email a few days later which stated that I had ordered more than they could handle. I did finally manage to get a few books at the come on price, but had to wait a long time for delivery. Subsequently, Amazon dropped Bushwhacked and I have yet to get a satisfactory explanation as to why. Most assuredly, it was not due to inadequate demand.

My guess on how it works, Fred, is that when your book first came out, Amazon ordered a few copies to stock in their warehouse(s) (maybe 2-5 copies? How many were they willing to sell to you at that price?)...for whatever reason, those copies didn't sell out in a timely-enough fashion for their tastes...to sell that initial set of copies, then, Amazon did the deep discount procedure...

There were a few other PA titles that did the same thing...the company can claim all day long it was a "test" to show "price doesn't matter"...but the fact Amazon could only supply so many at that price just backs up the notion that it was an Amazon discounting...based on overstock...

Connie, I have 2 titles out with Wings, but in e-format only. Like you, I can't see the virtue of having a hard copy version that is not available from Amazon at the very least, unless the publisher is proactive in promoting the book elsewhere. My first title, ACT OF LOVE, is doing quite well on Fictionwise, which sells e-formats only and lists books on a selective basis. My second, COLOR OF LOVE, came out this month and is only available from www.wings-press.com as yet.

When I actually sold a good number of one of my PA books (almost 500) all but 12 were by Amazon; that is my concern.
People who read, browse amazon for subjects, titles, etc and ALWAYS ask if they look it up there; I can't imagine I would have sold any otherwise. I have no idea who bought the nearly 500 copies of my 2nd book as I did ZERO promotion on my own, so I have to assume people an across it somehow on Amazon when looking up various keywords or something.
Of course, since the discount was removed on all of my books, I have barely sold even one...so it makes a huge difference. But I would still rather be listed there...somehow it makes me feel marginally legit, which is a much-needed feeling after dealing with the humiliations of being a PA author...

Todd,

the answer to your contract clause question...if you recall, that is the EXACT same form the royalty clause took at iPublish. By using the words, "after expenses" they can then charge against it everything from production, marketing, a percentage of overhead, etc...which is why those who signed such a contract rarely saw a royalty check. It is an underhanded trick used by companies who don't think, in my opinion. It is, in essence, making the authors equivalent to shareholders. If the company does not declare a profit, they do not pay out to shareholders/authors.

I don't know if Amazon can make or break you (in terms of selling a lot of books) but I suppose I will find out soon. I do not intend to list my book there.

On one hand, everyone who looks for a book goes to Amazon (myself included) so being listed there certainly is a good thing. On the other hand, with so many books listed there, maybe getting lost in the shuffle is commonplace.

Speaking of Amazon searches - Finding anything on Amazon is a real pain. When you search you get all kinds of "offers" that you were not looking for to begin with.

Amazon is shooting themselves in both feet. I do predict someone is going to come along and replace Amazon in the near future.

If you reference the "Love is Murder" mystery writer's conference in your query, submissions just might be opened up to you.

For the record, I put Treble Heart Books in my pocket as a possible future reference. There is a list of at least four other publishers ahead of it, mostly because of the Amazon flap.

My personal favorite small press to come out of this conference is "Quiet Storm."

I've pretty much ruled out any future POD choices.

Wow, LA...I'm surprised you remember the contract from iPub...
I can barely remember stuff I read months ago without looking it up again...
That was well over 2.5 years ago when iPub was still around...

whew!

Speaking of Amazon discounts (as Connie did)...I sort of goot snookered during that deal, because my book was charged at over the list price while the discount was still in place...by the time it was removed, my book was back to the normal list price, but was more expensive than before (with the discount, people could buy it for around $14 (excl. shipping)...sigh, I've never been able to win...

Dennis,

Good luck with Quiet Storm. I couldn't even get them to look at me - even though one of their authors, Phillip Tomasso, highly recommended me. I wasn't impressed with their attitude toward my query. Not very friendly - not very polite. I think it would have been nice if they had been willing to at least look at Malevolence. It truly is right up their alley. And with Phillip's recommendation, at least they should have asked to see the first few chapters.

But...don't have to worry about it anymore since Malevolence is sold.

I didn't mention the conference to Treble Heart - but I did mention you. (Hope you made a good impression! LOL!) Hopefully, they'll at least look at Sinner's Song. I think it's a good fit. To be honest, I just want to get SS published. It's the only novel I have still waiting for a home. I just want to move on. Once the new novel is passed along to my agent, I feel that I'll be in a position to take a long, hard look at the place I'm in - and decide what direction to go next.

ANYTHING TO DO WITH CONTRACTS AND SUCH, I TEND TO HAVE THAT INFORMATION STICK IN MY HEAD, NEVER TO LEAVE AGAIN.

Sold it to Zumaya. Interesting publisher. They're located in Canada - and are really doing some business.

My publisher announced our deal on Publisher's Lunch. Many people (authors and agents) wrote me saying that they'd seen it.

Nice to have a publisher who is working hard at promoting my work - even before it's released.

Still no go with Treble Heart. No submissions until after April 1st. Lee did tell me contact her again, however. Seems like a very nice person - just very busy.

I found it!!! I found it!!!

One of the tidbits I picked up at the conference was a list of publications that accept mystery/thriller short stories.

I have an old short story that has spent most of it's life doing absolutely nothing. I had it stored on the hard drive of the computer that crashed last fall. I knew that I had it backed up on a disc somewhere and finally found it this morning.

See, it pays to clean up all the clutter on your desk from time to time...

I originally wrote this story for a Writer's Digest contest but missed the deadline. They had a strict limit of 2000 words and so it is a really short story.

A couple of years ago, I dusted it off and entered it in the "Twist" contest at Futures Mystery Anthology Magazine... It was a finalist in that contest but didn't win, so back into my private version of the slush pile.

I think I'll flesh it out a tad and see if anybody nibbles. I'd really prefer a paying market.

I've just got to sell something...

Something that I forgot to mention but deserves some space...

This is for anybody contemplating attending a writer's conference and especially for those who will be doing presentations.

Fahion statements!!! Those who study human behavior will tell you that your wardrobe reflects your regard for your audience.

Here's what I got from a man who has written several best sellers and regularly gets six figure advances.

Casual but presentable clothes are preferred because they tend to make the group feel welcome and comfortable. You should avoid being overdressed because the environment simply doesn't call for it and people might feel as if you're talking down to them.

But above all, don't show up dressed like a bum. No ragged jeans and torn sweatshirts. That sort of disrespect for your audience is most often viewed as contempt and just plain rude.

My usual casual dress is a sundress and sandals. Luckily, I can wear them here for most of the year. Especially those that aren't completely sleeveless. The height of the heel on my shoes tells me if I'm dressed up or not...

Would that be acceptable if, and this is a big if, I ever had to do a presentation?

Location often dictates fashion... In Fort Lauderdale Harlan Coben and Jeremiah Healy showed up in shorts, completely acceptable in Florida, questionable in Chicago. Last summer at our state H.O.G. (Harley Owners Group) rally, I did a signing wearing "Harley casual."

Most women (and most men for that matter) tend to stick to the "business casual" guidelines.

Personally, at conferences I'm a tad on the flamboyant side with a bright orange shirt or red, white, and blue stripes and sometimes even paisley, but it's always top quality designer stuff. The object is to show some measure of individuality. I never wear junk. I feel it's important to display a successful and professional image.

***** CONFERENCE COMING UP *****

May first in Sarnia, Ontario the Lambton County Library will be hosting GenreConIII , a nifty little one day conference and it's FREE!!!!

The theme is Mystery/Horror/Fantasy and will feature discussion panels made up of Canadian and American (yours truly included) authors. There will also be readings and (I think) an art show.

The conference is followed by dinner at a local restaurant overlooking the St. Clair River (and Port Huron, MI).

Contact information is: genreconca@yahoo.ca

It's a fun conference with a little international flair. (AND... the only conference that I actually get paid to attend.)

I just got back from Canada, eh.

Some people say that when you hang out with folks who talk a certain way, you begin to pick up some of their accents and expressions but I don't believe that, eh.

I did learn how to speak a little Canadian while I was over there. Wanna hear me?

Banff!!! How's that, eh?

As always, it was a fun little conference. I would like to see it better attended but the quality is still there.

I was the only U.S. author on any of the panels and so I heard a lot of discussion on the different types of challenges that Canadian authors face. To begin with, more Canadian publishers are willing to accept unagented work. The biggest downside is that their distribution numbers don't come close to those of U.S. publishers. Seems that there are fewer than a dozen Canadian authors who actually earn their living by writing books.

Another thing that I found strange was that most American wholesalers are unwilling to distribute books in the U.S. that have a Canadian setting. I answered that by saying that I'm not so sure that those wholesalers accurately reflect the taste of the reading public. All of the Canadian authors chimed in saying that they hear that all the time but nobody in the distribution business seems to listen. One woman said that she knew of a Canadian writer who had a mystery novel set in Canada and couldn't break into the U.S. market and so he changed some street names and changed the name of the city from Ottawa to Cleveland and the book was released over here.

Dennis,
Maybe that is the reason that Sci-Fantasy, like Harry Potter is so big, it crosses boundaries, by making its own countries and universes...... therefore no one can catagorize it into JUST a US or English or Canadian or Austrailian market alone. You still have the same types of things going on, like murders and rapes, robberies, king overthrows and boy grows up, faces something down that should overcome him and comes out the victor, meets girl, falls in love, marries, divorces, dies of broken heart, except it is all underground or in some mythical fantasy land. And slaying a dragon is much like overcoming alcholism (?) and any other drug induced or medically induced abnormality.

Interesting.........

Can't accuse me of hijacking this one... I started it.

I went to a three author booksigning last night. Two of the writers are good friends of mine from Chicago.
David Ellis: writes legal thrillers and is an "Edgar Allen Poe Award" winner.
J.A.(Joe) Konrath: writes the Jack Daniels series and claimed a six figure advance for his first book.
Robert W. Walker: writes very dark stories in at least four different series with forty published full length novels.

David is an attorney and the other two are (retired) junior college ceative writing teachers.

They held a panel discussion followed by a question and answer session. It was a pleasure to witness the positive image that these authors all displayed. Treating even the most fundamental questions with respect, I'm sure they left the audience with a very favorable aftertaste.

But they fell seriously short of setting any sort of record that will ever make the Guiness short list so I'm not sure we can claim success here.

It may just be my midwestern ways, but why would anyone treat an audience (potential readers) with anything less than respect?

I got this way cool email today...

I belong to a zillion writer's forums and ocassionally chat with the folks there. A woman subscriber at DorothyL (A forum named for Dorothy L Sayers) noticed that I was from Michigan and struck up a conversation about my book. She sounded interested and said she might buy it. I warned her about the sticker shock.

Anyway, she shows up at the book signing that I attended Wednesday and picked up a copy from the store and asked me to autograph it. I thought it was cool for me to sell a book at somebody else's signing.

So today I get a letter from this woman. Talk about inflating my ego...

This is cut and pasted from her letter.

I read some of your book last night, until I got tired, and I wanted to tell you that you should never feel ashamed of the price. Believe me, it's worth the price. You are a gifted writer. You write with wonderful clarity, and your dialogue is fantastic. Most people have trouble with it, but you make it seem entirely natural. I was really struck because I didn't expect it to be as good as it is. There are any number of wonderfully composed sentences in there that paint a vibrant picture. I was very impressed. You also stay on track so beautifully. You know instinctively what moves the story forward. I think you must have strong powers of logic working for you along with your inbred talent.

I look forward to reading the rest of the book, though tonight I'm so tired, I may just zone right out.

that is so wonderful Dennis. And I must say that just from reading your posts and "knowing" what I do about you, that you most certainly deserve every word of it. She also says some really good pointed things in there that show she knows what she is talking about, in regards to your style and perception of your characters dialogue and structure. Well deserved, I'd have to say, but also very proud of you.

Congrats.

Damn, Dennis,
Looks like you would have just given your mother the book rather than sell it to her.
What a guy!

That sort of praise from a stranger makes all the frustration and discouragement worthwhile. Thanks for sharing that, Dennis.
