Word on the street is that Border's is launching it's very own POD publishing house. My guess is that it's an attempt to keep up with the Barneses (& Nobles)

B&N's iUniverse is currently the industry standard bearer and the hiring of Susan Driscoll as CEO shows that they do not intend to easily relinquish that spot.

Seems like Border's may be a day late and $499 short...

But then it's a big bandwagon and a long parade...

Everyone at Borders were great when I went in for them to order my book.
The ones at B&N?
Tools.

I confess to being one is no author.

But the royalties were GREAT. :-)

Yes Laurel I know you went with I universe and I understand your reasons why.
My thought centers more on the first-time writer who is unable to interest any publisher. With all the e-publishers and pod's out there, almost anything can be published.

I'm still perfecting my skills in hopes of one day to move from "writer" to "author". Having done the POD with PA and the e pub with Wings, I still don't consider myself as an author.

I know we can go round and round on definitions (we did this some months back defining author) but this is just how I view myself. I'm a writer, I've been published in magazines and journals and my "stories" have been put in book form but I've yet to receive an advance.

when I land a contract with a traditional publisher, then I will consider myself an author. Till then, call me a hack. :-)

I have to agree with Steven...
the majority of folks I've dealt with at Borders stores have been helpful...
except they STILL haven't paid me...need to go harass them this weekend...

B&N...very few of them have ever been helpful...

"any author who has to PAY to publish a book is no author..."

A rather blanket statement, I'd say...
So, an author who chooses to self-publish would be no author?
And by this same definition, being published by PA would mean you're an author.
(since you don't pay them to get published...to sell books, yes, but not to get published)

Myself, anyone can write words down on a piece of paper...anyone can be a writer.
If that same person can put together a complete story, and keep it coherent, I'd call them an author...

But that's just my opinion...

Big difference between writer and storyteller. I've seen many folks who can write perfect English that have NOTHING to say.

A B Dalton yesterday (who are run by the B&N in Bloomington-Normal) ordered 3 more copies of BULLETPROOF SOUL after the ones they had in stock sold :-)
Go figure.

Borders ordered mine direct, no consignment deal...but another wanted consignment. I find walking in they tend to order...but ya never know. For some reason the WALDENS or B Daltons seem to order more.

From a financially profitable standpoint, I would gladly be labeled "no author". But then, I'm a numbers cruncher.

Of course, it all depends on quality.

I had a Waldenbooks manager order 20 copies of my book for a signing...
it was one of the most unbelievable things I've ever seen...
tried to reason with her, but she did it anyway...
I guess I should go back sometime soon, and see how many she still has left
(at full price...ugh)...
