Hi All, Listen, I've had some terrific feedback about the Lending Library that used to be highlighted over on the PA boards. Since I'm supposed to be dying an ugly, slow death over there, the library has found new life at The Cutting Edge e-zine (http://cutting-edge-ezine.com/index.php). I would like to include non PA authors as well, to be more inclusive. There's a ton of talent out there and it would be nice to include everyone. If anyone is interested in donating a copy of their book, I'd be more than happy to add it to the list. I'm renaming it to The New Lending Library. If anyone is interested, here is a list of what I need to get it posted. *A place where I can d/load your cover art and synopsis. Most of you have websites and I can simply nab them from there and get it on the LL site. *A copy of your book. Feel free to email me at lending@cox.net Take care, Lynn |

Well, that was always the intent, Victoria. I have The Cutting Edge to thank for the new digs and I couldn't be happier. Lynn |

Victoria, how is your library run? Does the reader pay for the mailing fees? Do you send them via media mail? I started out by sending everything media mail. People complained that it took too long, so I went to Priority Mail People complained that it was too expensive. So, I've gone back to media mail again to keep costs down. Do you have any suggestions I might incorporate? Thanks! Lynn |

Lynn, Media mail is the wisest move to make. And if people demand faster service than what the USPS can provide, I'd recommend that they have 2 choices: 1.) They can go to their local library of book store and try to get the book being requested. 2.) They can prepay for priority mail. You can't look a gift horse in the mouth and expect not to get bit. And from mailing books to customers, I can fully attest to the $1.85 media mail cost being accurate to the penny. Although, for the effort and the cost of envelopes, etc, I would actually recommend charging $2 each. Still no profit, but at least you wouldn't be losing money on the actual cost of mailing. 'Nuff from my neck of the woods. LA www.authorsinkbooks.com LaurieAnne

Lynn, here's the way it works: http://www.sfwa.org/org/bookplan.htm. It's not quite the same idea as the Lending Library (I discover now that I read the information more carefully) since it's not a permanent fixed library, but rather a way of passing books from hand to hand. Still, the intent is more or less the same--to give readers a way of seeing what's out there without having to buy the books (and also, possibly, to recommend for the Nebula Award). I was pleased to see that my latest book is on the plan. The guy who coordinates the plan seems to get anywhere between 5 and 15 books a month--you can see the volume from links at this page: http://www.sfwa.org/reviews/index.html. - Victoria http://www.victoriastrauss.com http://www.writerbeware.com |

Lynn, Is the new lending library set up already? I tried to find it on the cutting edge site but cannot find it. As a disgruntled old postal employee....I agree with LaurieAnn about the media mail being the best method to send. However, you should not eat the cost of the envelopes, etc. Kathy |

Unless your book is as tiny as mine (100+ pages), in which case I can send a copy to anyone in the US for $1.52, first class... Bwaaahahahaha :-P |

Thanks for the advice. The envelopes aren't a biggie. I get them in bulk at Costco, so I don't charge for that. Kathy, I'm not sure whether Paul has had a chance to update it yet. Feel free to take a look at it and email me if you'd like to read a book. The site addy is: http://pa-lendinglibrary.com Paul has been pretty swamped with updating my own site, so he'll get around to it, I'm sure. The only thing you need is the address and you're set to go. I'll be doing some updating on the site as well but my computer has other ideas and won't get me online. I'm reduced to using my kids' computer, and while that's nice, all my website stuff is on my computer. Ack! Holler anytime if you'd like to borrow a book. Todd, you nut! I know no mailing method is perect, but if I had to take each book and decide if it should go media mail or 1st class, I'd never get anything done. At least this makes it easy to wrap it up and get it out. Lynn lending@cox.net |

Heh, I was just commenting... :-) Both on the incredibly small package my book comes in (109 pages), and...... No, that was pretty much it... ;-P |

It is now a link in the menu at The Cutting Edge. In the next day or two the domain name will change to TheLendingLibrary.com. Thanks! |
