This has been one of my projects for a while, but yesterday I found a new, Large-Screen PDA with an 8.4" screen. For anyone interested in reading e-books on a personal device, this is currently the ONLY unit on the market that operates on a Windows operating system and can thereby use non-proprietary e-book formats such as Adobe Acrobat .pdf, Microsoft Reader .lit, and Mobipocket .prc, and possibly even Palm .pdb. They are currently available in the states only through a company called Convergent Technology (so far as I can tell) at http://www.convergentech.com/detail.aspx?ID=8 and is made by a Taiwanese manufacturer named "MobiNote Technologies, Inc." The unit, pictured here, is listed at Convergent Tech at $829.00. Due to the fact that I have not seen this unit ANYWHERE except at this website, I'm thinking they have not yet thought of the possibilities in the E-book reader market (for example, Gemstar expected to sell up to 7 million of their REB readers in 2001 - but shot themselves in the foot with proprietary software). Just thought I'd put some information up. CEW |
