Well, it's always a last resort option...and the advantages of seeing your book in print while retaining rights so that you may still be able to submit is attractive to some. Until I know for sure if my ms is approved for publishing, I continue to do the research. I don't want to face the sad rejection letter without knowing what steps to take next, and where to submit next. I'll use the suggestions from the rejection letter, if there are any, fix my ms, then move onto my little collection of potential publishers. :-) Self-publishers are on the very bottom, and "last resort" of that list. :-)

"Until I know for sure if my ms is approved for publishing, I continue to do the research."

Well, the wait is over and I just wanted everyone to know what a brilliant piece of work Joy has written. I laughed 'til I fell off my chair and cleared out my Kleenex box. Look for this woman's work to be in the hands of anyone who enjoys a great story. All I can say is, Wow.

Thank you, Joy.

Oh my gosh! I'm still doing a happy dance! I forwarded your message from last night to my sister in KY, brother in Napa CA and dad in FL. Thank you Lynn for the wonderful compliments, and I'm excited!

I have tons of questions that aren't listed on the Behler website. There was a mindsight post I glanced at a while back and I've been trying to find it. I think Fred had answered a few questions on it. I wish I had read it more thoroughly at the time.

Oh, I started book #3 this weekend. I'm a mess.

All publishers, big and small, are different (brilliant observation eh?) but one can spot unprofessional behavior a mile off. I've worked with a number of small spots and the fit is always different. Truth, I have learned, is incredibly subjective to most of them. Treating an author like they have half a brain stem is also a plus. If you lose respect for a pub or folks associated with said pub, that can be bad.

I didn't want to start a new thread, so I thought I'd put this post under the heading it belongs: "Actual Publishing Questions".

Here goes:

I'm looking for any information anyone might have concerning British Publishers. In my quest for that "perfect" publisher, I've looked at a few that are "across the pond" that seem like they might be a good fit. However, I'm curious about any potential pitfalls in going this route. Do the majority of UK publishers even work with American authors?? I know that's a pretty general question, and that each individual house probably has its own policies. But, if anyone here has any info as to what to look out for when getting a novel published with a UK Press, I'd be hella grateful for any advice.

Thanks.

Hi SF. I was curious about that at one time, but I'm not sure how the postage thing would work out if you go that route. It might not be cost effective if shipping costs were too high. Just something to think about, unless you're talking about e-publishing. No postage required with e-pub. :-)

Hi Joy!

I guess congratulations are in order! It's funny, the places where I have to pick up the news. I just stopped by to take a break from my mind-poppingly busy new job-Marketing Director at Behler Publications (which I am starting just as I'm going over the edits for my second novel) and to say hi to my friends here. I reckon we'll be talking before too long, dear. I look forward to it.

S.F., large British publishers are a lot like large US publishers in that they are best approached through an agent. Since agents usually concentrate their marketing efforts in their own domestic markets, that means you'd need to approach UK agents.

Smaller UK houses can be approached unagented, just like here, but you really need to do your research--the UK is rich in dishonest vanity publishers, many of which are cunningly disguised to look like real publishers.

Are you sure your work is suitable for the UK market? Science fiction, for instance, isn't culture-specific, but mainstream fiction can be, and a novel set in the US might be a tough sell in the UK, unless it had first been published here.

LOL Diana and Lynn! I can't wait to "meet" you! Are you and Lynn neighbors, or do you work with Behler through the Internet? Marketing director? Hmm...that does sound promising! I'd love to here from you via e-mail, when/if you have time. I am very much impressed with the warm greetings and communication with Lynn and Fred. It's refreshing to publish through a company that takes the time away from their busy schedules and keep in touch!

Lynn,

I don't think it's a shooting offense, personally. And, don't worry, I'll get back to work in a minute...

Joy,

To answer your questions: Lynn and I are not neighbors, she lives in sunny CA, and I live in rainy NJ. I do my Behler work through the computer, the telephone, the US postal system, UPS, fax, and in person (Fred and I are representing Behler Pubilications at the Book Expo in Chicago in June). Lynn and Fred are truly wonderful people, and I mean that sincerely. It is an honor to work for them and the fantastic group of authors they are bringing together. I look forward to working with you. I'll email you soon. If you get impatient, feel free to email me at: diana@behlerpublications.com . Okay, it's back to work.

I got impatient and e-mailed you. I agree, Lynn and Fred are wonderful, without a doubt. They seem very down to earth. If only I could meet you all in person. That would be fun! Convention anyone? (tee-hee)

Joy

Geez, I didn't mean to hijack this thread, but I wanted to say thank you, Joy and Diana. All I can say is our dog seems to really love us, so I hope it carries over to everyone else as well.

Yes, we are excited about the Chicago Book Expo. Even though we'll only have two books to showcase, it's worth getting our name out there.

"Convention anyone?"

Now, the last time I did that, I received a bucketload of trouble! LOL

British pubs act in a much different manner than U.S. publishers.

For instance, look at J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter.

I've tried to contact her agent, Christopher, on several occasions.

He is "un-reachable".

American agents seem to be either hiding in the shadows, or willingly available to aspiring writers.

So, here I am. Have a book? Send it to me. I will even leave my office number because I'm so willing to see the next bestselling manuscript, and desperate by the way.

Donny Ray - (1) 480-474-8211. No fees whatsoever.

All I want is a good book.
