I'm using this venue to make some announcements. Most of you know I review for Midwest Book Review.

To Stephen Paul - your publisher has not replied to my request for a review copy of your book. It's been long enough now that I think he does not intend to respond.

The last two requests I made to PublishAmerica for review copies went unanswered. Sometimes PA does not reply to the emails but send out the review copies. But these requests were made in early February and early March, with a re-request sent through mid march. No books have been received and I have contacted the authors via private email since they do not participate at Mindsight. I'm not sure what this means. I haven't had a problem with PA until now.

My days as a reviewer (and writer) are numbered. My vision has deteriorated so rapidly that it is a struggle to read. A combination of factors contribute to this problem and not all of them can be fixed. I'm able to work around it for now by various means, but not for much longer.

Please don't see this as a whine. It's simply sharing information.

Laurel,
That's terrible news on several levels.
Not to pry too much, but what is the problem with the eyes?
I hope it is a controllable situation.

Legally blind in the left eye since birth. Cataracts, glaucoma, and macular degeneration in the right eye. The cataracts are operable, glaucoma controlled, but it's the macular degeneration that causes the problem. It's rapidly increasing in area.

Laurel,
have you tried mega doses of Lutien, as in red tomato and other vegetable sources, the redder the better, or in your daily multi-vitamin? There are some that say it works wonders. Or better yet, get a supplement that is nothing but vegetable mix, it is called Super Green or something like that. It is worth a try, rather than losing what you still have, go on the proactive course and start taking some of the herbal, mineral, trace vitamins, and high green content vitamins that you can find out about at a local health or hololistic health store. Or even call them on the phone and see what they might recommend. Macular degeneration is nothing to fool aroound with, but there are inroads being made every day on that front. Talk to someone in the vitamin groups. It might not work, but the only thing that would hurt is your pocketbook, as nothing that would be recommended would be able to hurt you worse than losing that one good eye.

A lady here that I know, was going through it and had a surgery procedure, and I lost touch with her after that, but the initial outcome was for the better, how it worked out in the long run, I don't know. You absolutely have to do everything you can do to save your eyesight. That is a must to have. I know you have probably tried everything you can, but keep checking on what is new out htere, cause the doctors and other people in all areas are working on this one all the time. Lots of people are being affectedd by Macular Degeneration lately. Don't really understand why, though.

Bailey - your publisher just sent me an email asking for my address. You got fast action.

Claudia - I take eye vitamins containing lutein, provided by my ophthalmologist. I will check out the ones you mentioned. Thanks. This is genetic, going back through the generations on my mother's side.

Laurel, my mother-in-law recently had cataract and glaucoma surgery at the same time, and I watched the procedure on a closed-circuit TV. Very interesting to watch, and she says her eyesight is much improved.

I'd like to start a thread like Shrewsbury's called LJ Pubbings, but mine are prettypaltry compared to his!!

I do have a couple announcements to the general readership.

PA sent me one of the three review copies requested so far.

Pedestal Magazine online requested I review a poetry book recently. Pedestal pays for reviews. The staff liked my review so invited me to be a regular reviewer. I was pleased about that. Pedestal provides the books they want me to review, and don't accept reviews posted elsewhere.

Following Steven's lead, I decided to submit a short story or two so I can add to my resume. No guarantee my short stories would be accepted, but I will try.

Go for it Girl, Good for you on the part about being a reviewer for Pedestal. Hope PA gets it together and sends the other requested books, but unfortunately, we all know that they are a bag of wind and only blow when they see fit, so don't hold your breath waiting for them. Wouldn't want you to turn blue andd die from lack of air.

Laurel--

I don't know where you intend to send your short stories, but if you choose to send them to literary journals, remember to check to learn if they have a reading period, often the case with those published by universities. Otherwise, they'll just return the manuscript, and you'll have wasted your hard-earned postage money.

Thanks for the heads up Frank. In this particular situation, Pedestal encouraged me to submit short stories or poems. If they accept them, they will be in the editions that don't feature my reviews. IF they accept them, that is. Pedestal is a reputable group and I like the work they post so.....figured I would spread my wings a bit, but not too much. I don't write many short stories but have a few kicking around in my head.

As for hard copy journals, I would have no idea where to start. I'll wait awhile before tackling that obstacle.

I was eating a slice of apple pie with ice cream, watching CSI, when the light dawned. Thanks for your good thoughts. I meant to say that when I posted earlier and got all befuddled and forgot. My one remaining brain cell suddenly kicked in. Better late than never eh??

That's tough about only having one brain cell.
Listen, if you need some, I know a guy over on another
board who has a bunch he never uses.

Laurel, so sorry to hear about your problem with your eyes. And you're so young, at least you look so young. Hope it can be corrected. I do know a lady who has a large print computer screen if it comes to that. Congratulations on your new review assignment.

And Bill, if the person you're referring to, who doesn't use his brain cells, is who I think it is, I'd beware. If there's a chance he'd be willing to make a donation and he's used the cells even once this could be quite dangerous. Or even if he hasn't used those particular cells and they're in the same area as the one he might have used, they could still be contaminated due to seepage. Think about it! Wow, what an idea for a sci-fi horror story.

Or that the electrical energy in his brain cells that die FLOW into his computer, due to the great bile in hsi spirit and pact with stygian powers beyond...thus traveling through the fingers of the Internet...seeping into the matrix of each site, implanting themselves on each board and once folks read the words, BAM...the seepage soaks in and you start to question if day is really night...

think of that next time ya read his posts.

Is it possible that I am merely an alien's sperm cell, thinking he is a human being???
Well, thinking… I actually have quite a lot of brain cells, but they are not connected. Sort of float around in my head and accidentally touch each other at random…

Hmmm...

Hard to believe it's been close to TWO YEARS since I started this thread. My one remaining brain cell is still zooming about doing the work of zillions of missing compadres. My fat cells are still flourishing. I'm still trying to cut back on reviewing, with little effect. So here is the latest.

I enjoy reviewing, but reading 20 or 30 books a month does not allow for much of anything else. I'm still trying to regroup and refocus. My fourth book is in the pipeline. If there is to be a fifth, something has to give. Not that I'm convinced there SHOULD be a fifth, mind you. But I have several books started and they have been languishing in my Word program for two or three years now. I still get requests from people with long memories for a prequel or sequel to The Alley of Wishes. That is a major project that cannot be completed by fits and starts, if I do it at all. Beck Sanow and company deserve more than a once over lightly.

Many of my reviews now are of poetry books. Reviewing books from a couple Irish publishers has also changed my focus. Since I'm not a scholar, my reviews continue to be of content. I'm not a critic. And since my review work is voluntary -- unpaid -- I can be free to say what I want. :-)

So as of this date in history, I review for the following:
Senior Reviewer, Midwest Book Review
Review Editor, New Works Review
Staff Reviewer, Shadow Poetry Quill Quarterly
Guest Reviewer, The Wandering Hermit Review
Guest Reviewer, Irish News and Entertainment
Guest Reviewer, Small Press Review
Guest Reviewer, The HyperTexts
The Grass Dance
The Alley of Wishes

Although I have an above-average memory, I don't need it to be included in the crowd clamoring for BOTH a prequel and sequel to The Alley of Wishes, since I just finished it last night. I'll write my "official" review in the next couple of days and post it in all the usual places, but I just want to say now that it's so easy to tell Laurel is a poet as well as a novelist because her fiction reads like a sonnet to her readers. And that Beck Sanow . . . <sigh>

Heh heh heh Todd. :-)

Scott -- not many reviewers get paid. Oh the ones who work for major dailies or magazines do, but general run of the mill reviewers like me do not. We get free review copies, but I would have to live in the Taj Mahal or White House to have room for all those books. I donate boxes and boxes of books to libraries in my area.

Thanks for the kind words, Joyce. It's doubtful a follow up to Alley will ever be written, but on the outside chance I decide to do it, I will handle the Nick and Anna history within a sequel. Nick and Anna seem to be the main focus of curiosity for readers -- prequel-wise at least. And my publisher still says Alley will become a movie or mini series so.....maybe I'll wait to see if that happens before buckling down and writing a sequel.
