A Novel Idea is a one-of-a kind book store that is slated to open in Las Vegas in late summer. Why would one first pay to get a book published, and then pay (monthly) to have it stocked on a bookstore's shelves? I wonder if titles from a certain publisher will be eligible, or if it indeed is only 'self-published' titles...

If not, yet another store not interested in stocking them?

Dunno. Perhaps a publisher would think 50 bucks to stick 10 titles out there for a month and see how many sell may not be a bad idea for a test.

It would be interesting to see what type of consignment deal the store is offering...a standard 60-40 split, or altered because of the $5/month fee...
If the store sold 1 book/month (of a particular title), on a $20 book, the store would then bring in $13/month from one author, and the author only brings in $12...seems sort of wrong that way...

I prefer my consignment deals to be of the free variety... :-)

It's too bad B&N and Borders (at least in this region) are both putting policies in place to try and discourage local author involvement, so I've been told by administrators at the store...sure hope those local managers who are author-friendly remain so...

I dunno why chains owners would discourage local involvement. Ya would think that would kill a few sales.

Then again, perhaps there is a nation wide POD dent where local authors are indeed bothering enough stores to make the chains pissed. Rather than deal with new stuff or ways, they prefer to stick to old time distribution methods etc.

Either way, bad pub for them. I know I haven't bought a thing in the local B&N since they wouldn't carry BULLETPROOF SOUL because of the POD stigma.

Personally, (as a publisher)I'd rather put our $50 toward national exposure than sinking it into one untested venue.

I guess I should clarify that statement...I'm certain they will still have 'some' local involvement...the major problem laid on local authors now (around here, at least...but from the way it sounded, more than likely isn't just local or regional) is that the stores are being discouraged from having authors supply books...for signings, for consignment deals, etc. Local authors whose publishers supply books to stores in normal methods probably won't have the same problem...

And honestly, since I had to wait seven months to receive payment for books sold from both Borders and B&N (just received checks earlier this month from their corporate offices), I'm not all that anxious to supply my own books to a chain store anyway.

I think the managers who are more author-friendly realize that the majority of authors are book readers and buyers as well...and like you said, when they stick it to local authors, they're shutting down a major revenue source (especially since we all like to tell stories, and telling our friends and such about the scrooge-ish ways of stores may keep them away as well)...

I refuse to set foot in the Borders store on the west side of town anymore...for multiple reasons, one of which was they wouldn't let me do a signing in conjunction with a newspaper review (which was going to be free advertisement for them) because they (rough quote) "only do signings for new books", which is a crock in and of itself...another being that even though the store on the east side sells copies for $12.95, they refused to drop the price of their in-store copies from $16.95...

One day, stores and chains will learn...until then, it's good to find a publisher who they're more willing to accept.
