Hi, I am looking for a good editor (I think).......not to correct mistakes but to improve the writing and do a really professional job on my book.

It is now in the hands of a real publisher and I a waiting for my first rejection ever.........if a miracle happens and it is accepted, then they will
do have it edited, but if not, I'd like to have it done myself before submitting it again.

There are several professional editors on this board, Molly. I do editing for pay for the publisher of my second book, but don't really consider myself a professional. There are others here who are far better at it than I will ever be.

If they are not bogged down in other things, maybe they can help you.

Well, I have received my first rejection. I wanted to share it with ya'll
because it was so nice. Having such compliments from someone with her fame actually made me feel pretty good about my book. (I'm my biggest critic)

Thanks so much for sending me a copy of your novel. It's beautifully written -- some of the best writing I've seen in a long, long time. Unfortunately, it's not quite right, editorially, for Bellebooks. However, I encourage you to contact some good agents who handle regional fiction, and send them the book. It definitely has potential. You might also want to contact Hill Street Press, in Athens, Ga. A lovely, reputable regional publisher who may be interested in your work. I wish you the very best of luck placing this intriguing novel.

Molly, that's not really a reject, it's a recommendation. I'd do precisely as she suggest.

you know she read the book, or at least parts of it - way ta go!!!

Hi Molly,

There are a lot of things you can try if you're interested in editing yourself. There are helpful books on the market that break editing down for you step by step. There are websites where professional editors show you what publishers look for and how an edited manuscript should be. I don't know if you have Microsoft Word but this is an excellent program for typos and spell checking. MW also shows you when you have a sentenced written incorrectly and gives you suggestions of another one by the click of the button. I've bought some editing software that was SUPPOSED to be so great but ended up frustrated because it didn't do what it claimed to. I find MW great. It will quickly clean your work and grammar while educating you as well. I had a professional editor once. I was pleased with her work but I am too cheap to pay so much money for an editor so I took a class, got a certificate in editing and became fluent in editing myself. THIS was a great way for me and opened my eyes. The trick is getting on the inside of the fundamentals of putting together the manuscript. If you do it yourself, if you don't mind a little work...it's well worth it because you won't have to go searching for people in the long run. Remember you only need your work edited enough for people to be able to understand and appreciate the story. MW helps you with sentence structure as well. For the actual story content you can look into what experts say on various articles and they will show you how to work the content in your work. There are millions of helpful books and software that helps you with story content such as character development and pace. You may end up spending a little money but you won't spend nearly as much as you would for a professional editor. Many editors these days are using basic programs such as MW to edit manuscripts you send them. I've met many editors and a lot rely on computer programs these days anyway. Sorry I can't recommend a " human " editor but I believe my suggestions help writers in the long run. Once you learn the ins and outs you can do the professional job yourself. It's all about learning.
