For Budding Authors, a Rapid-Fire Publisher
By ERIC A. TAUB

HOT off the presses" has taken on a newly literal meaning with the installation of the first instant book-printing machine in an American bookstore.

Take a floppy disk or CD-ROM to Bookends in Ridgewood, N.J., or e-mail the store a file, and pow! - in as little as 17 minutes a perfect-bound paperback version of your novel, family memoir, or favorite Bulgarian desserts can be printed.

Every book comes complete with a customized cover chosen from among several thousand designs. For an additional fee, it can also be trademarked and registered with a machine-readable ISBN number, essential for any author hoping to get the work stocked by a major chain and on its way to becoming a best seller.

Of course, the chances of best-seller status are as likely as sudden world peace. Which is why Victor Celorio, president of InstaBook in Gainesville, Fla., created his print-on-demand machine in the first place.

"Best-selling books are so outside the norm that they're an anomaly," said Mr. Celorio, who comes from a long line of inventors. (He says his uncle created an automated tortilla-making machine.) "Real bookselling means selling a book here and a book there over a long period."

Walter Boyer, who owns Bookends with his wife, Pat, decided to offer print-on-demand services after he was regularly asked by novice writers how they could publish their books.

With the large capital outlay involved in traditional publishing, which involves printing and storing thousands of copies, mainstream publishers are more reluctant to take on titles that they doubt will generate quick, substantial sales.

One alternative that has surfaced in recent years is the use of Internet-based print-on-demand companies like AuthorHouse, iUniverse and Xlibris. These online services cost more than Bookends, although they may offer more assistance in getting a book sold. Copies are printed when ordered, and royalties are split between the company and the author.

Customers pay AuthorHouse (www.authorhouse.com) a minimum of $698 to prepare a black-and-white paperback book for printing and to obtain an ISBN number to make the work available at retail outlets. IUniverse (www.iuniverse .com) charges $459 for its basic package, which includes, among other items, five paperback copies, an ISBN number and availability through online and retail merchants. The $500 Xlibris package (www .xlibris.com) includes an ISBN number and bar code, registration with Amazon and other online merchants, a Web page and one author copy.

But the Bookends store in Ridgewood charges $150 for printing 10 copies of any work up to 200 pages. Larger books are priced higher, and and subsequent 10-book orders are discounted. All royalties are kept by the author. The store also offers editing and marketing services through associates at an additional cost.

Several forms of digital encryption protect an author's work from being stolen and reprinted without permission. Files can only be read through the Instabook machine. And once the book is printed, the file is automatically erased.

Customers can also choose to print any of 10,000 public-domain titles stored on InstaBook's servers. Using a high-speed Internet connection, the store downloads the file and prints the title within minutes.

Mr. Boyer believes that the print-on-demand machine helps distinguish independent booksellers from the large discount chains. "Our goal is to have lots of booksellers across the country hooked into a print-on-demand network," he said. "Anything that makes us different from the chain bookstores is useful."

In addition to working with Bookends, Mr. Celorio has placed four machines in Toronto bookstores and one each in Mexico and Italy. He envisages a day when an author instructs a bookstore in Los Angeles to send a digital book file to another shop in Lagos, to be printed in seconds for a single customer thousands of miles away.

While nothing that striking has happened at Bookends, the store, which operates a separate Web site for its printing service (www.booksbybookends.com), has received inquiries from authors as far away as Florida and California. One of Mr. Boyer's first assignments was to print copies of a Hungarian book for distribution to Hungarian bookstores throughout the United States.

"This is another important part of our mix," Mr. Boyer said. "The more books we print, the more salespeople we have out there."

Interesting story, Frank. I expect they will be overloaded in no time.

I know most authors don't feel the way I do, but I think owning my book and keeping all royalties would be a favorable situation and worth the fee. The book pricing would not be a huge issue because I could set my own price. Plus the book would be available whenever I wanted it.

My books have a large and diverse audience. Thus far, most of my sales come from people who order them from me, from a supply I've had on hand at home. People have ordered books from the UK, Germany, Czech Republic, New Zealand, Australia, and from around the US My second book - The Alley of Wishes - sells for 35.90 on amazon since my publisher does not use an amazon-mandated distributor. Who would pay that for a book of fiction? Not many people would.

Despite having said that, the ideal for me would still be to have a publisher who respects me and appreciates my work.

Very interesting article. I actually contacted Mr. Celorio a few months ago to find out about purchasing a machine, as I think it would definitely open a world of opportunities to people wanting to have bound books for fundraisers, reunions, gifts, etc.

Wow, Frank,
How cool for you!
You can print endless copies of Al Gore's bio. and
hand them out on street corners.
I'll bet you're excited.

I can remember they tried something like that in the eighties with computer games. You could order the game and a machine would put it on a cassette (eighties!) and printed a label for it.

Don’t know why it never made it. But I suppose there is a market for it. Today everybody can already be a published author, but with those machines you keep all the earnings yourself! I’m pretty sure though that nobody would want to review the book as it is another form of POD. If the book is good it might still be picked up by the traditional publishers.

That's the outfit that they talked about on "Publisher's Lunch" a couple of months back. Seems to me that was the original intent when the concept of POD was first being bounced around.

Some German company tried marketing a POD machine about ten years ago but they were just too unreliable and never caught on. I think Kinko's may have somehow been involved. The idea was, you walked into the store, typed in an ISBN, swiped your credit card, and a book happened. Just you and the machine, no other humans involved.

I spent about a half hour on the phone one day talking to one of the technicians at LightningSource and she confirmed the buzz that the machines were a maintenance nightmare.

I suppose these pottery places are popular other places than here. You walk in, design, paint, etc. a platter, vase, whatever. It doesn't make you an artist, a potter or sculptor anymore than a karaoke bar or these recording studios where you can pay a certain fee and cut a record, make you a professioal singer. The majority of people going to those places, realize that it's just for fun or whatever.

I think the whole instabook thing could work in the same way.

I don't think a book you had printed at the local shop, would be considered anything more than a book you had printed at the local shop. I doubt the majority of the industry would find it anymore threatening than Betty Crocker finds these cookbooks churches and schools print as fundraisers.

Now, as far as being able to print books that are already in print, that would be great.

When I was thinking about it, I did think it would be a good idea to talk to teachers about their required reading and be able to print those books out for students all at once instea of them havign to hunt or copies. Since the nearest bookstore is quite a ways from our side of town, I thought it just migh work.

I personally can't be bothered with the printing and distribution. That would be an overload for me. If I can't come up with a manuscript that traditional publishers would take a risk on, that would end it for me. I wouldn't stop writing, but it would be purely for my own enjoyment.

I think it would work well if you were doing something small, like a family history for the family or a book for kids that you were going to give out, or a book of poems or something. But not for writers who are serious about their trade who want to be taken seriously as a writer. I don't want to have to print the books, and try to get bookstores of any kind to take them either. I just want to write and let the publishers handle that. It's enough to have to search for honest publishers and agents.

I like to write, and just hope that there will be others that would like to read the stuff. And it would be really nice if a proper, old-fashioned publisher would like to publish the stuff. About a year ago I was convinced that this had happened. But most people on this board have been there themselves…

Just to point out that copying and pasting the entire article is a violation of copyright. What you want to do is paste a link. Adding a few lines would be fine, but this is a blatant violation.

R,
PERHAPS you should talk directly to the offender who made the violation. There are some here who are totally aware of those legalities and some who are not. The person who posted the original article is the person to speak to about this, not the whole board, unless of course, you think that you are the one who has to educate the whole board on this subject.

But then again, you did not deign to sign your name, and we have no way of knowing who you are, so you might just be wanting to pick a fight and be a troll. So, why should anyone pay attention to you? In other words, IF you have a legitimate gripe about something and want to bring attention to it, do it in the right way and you will be gaining the proper attention along with and concerning your motivations towards correcting a misstep on the part of one of the posters here.

Claudia

I normally list only the link, but have found that many readers are reluctant to make the Times connection because they must first sign up, an easy process with no obligation but it still keeps them away. Thus, I made an exception in this case because I thought the matter was most significant to writers. Please note that proper and complete attribution was given beforehand.
