Steven,
We all knew why you signed with Behler, and were happy for you in the doing. I never wanted to post that rant of his, but when you came in and didn't know what was going on, and I had saved it, I thought that you should know. The whole thread of which at last count there were about 30+ entires was typical, except that KevinY got in there and really yanked HB's chain a bit and then started some of the others thinking more about their own futures as writers and the possible consequences of HB's attitude should they someday sign with another company. The thread was pulled sometime in the night or early morning hours Sunday/Monday AM. When all the other people started thinking and KevinY got their 2 cents in, that was when it got pulled, not before, and the reason most likely had to do with the "good sense" that was starting to be displayed, not HB's rant, or the other PAer's proud stance to stay with PA, come hell or high water and all that good crap.

Anyway, just thought you should know, this time it was you that was being attacked. It will be anyone of us anytime HB feels a need to "expose" any of us for what he thinks is a success coming up. And we all know you are on your way to that succcess, it is coming soon, and HB is sooooo very jealous of you and anyone else that shows it can be done. We all wish nothing but the best for anyone here or who comes here from elsewhere, but that is not the way things are done "over there." They want everyone to languish in the mud with them for as long as possible and never seek outside of the closed circle for any other reinforcement of the good that they are doing. You did that, and continue to do it with great proficiency all the time, and you will go far, young man....... I think I speak for all of us, when I say that I am proud to "know" you and call you friend.

Claudia, Steve, just so you know. It wasn't Steve who was being targeted at all. It was someone else. Well, along with me, that is.

This has nothing to do with publishing, per se, but everything to do with yours truly. There are other PA authors who have started publishing companies without inciting HB's attempts at playing God. Why? Because there was no one directing him to do so.

This is actually a private problem taking on a public venue so that others may vent their frustration. It's like they say in the movies, 'It's personal, baby.' Nothing more, nothing less.

It's silly, childish and laughable. The earth will continue to turn and the sun will rise every morning whether HB decides to resume his meds or not. A non-issue.

I didn't think it was me, really, sounds a bit too much to be me....but I wager some folks need enemies to survive.
I never give certain folks pub by mentioning their names.

If I wanted to be a name dropper, I could be. I am a guy writing stories. Nada else.

HB was usually ok to me on their boards. I suppose if he ever wanted to speak to me he would be man enough to write me. But there really is nada to say. Is he a paid employee of PA to talk smack for them? IF he is, then he might be worth listening to...but if he is just being a mouthy writer with nothing else better to do than prop up that company, then, again...why listen for trees falling in a cleared forest if no one is there?

If he ever wants to be anything more than published on MESSAGE BOARDS everyday, he should concentrate on WRITING. There is a helluva concept, folks.

I've been trying not to comment on this thread, but it's starting to bother me.

I would just like to point out to everyone that HB Marcus will not be able to reply to your comments here, and while that may be alright at some places, it kind of bothers me that we have an entire thread here discussing a person that isn't able to comment or reply (OK... so perhaps retort might be a better word).

Regarding the topic at hand, I'd like to put forth that there really isn't anything new under the sun... He is who he is. I realize that things are being said and implied and all of that, which makes people irritated, but this is a public board that anyone can read, but at which Mr. Marcus is unable to post - for reasons of his own choosing, really.

Hmmm... which argument was I making?

Uh... given the choice, I prefer green candies to red ones... yeah, that was it.

Steven said: "Then again, none of us could reply to his comments on the PA board."

...and to those of us who could or that did reply (including me), the thread was pulled immediately. Why? Because a large percentage did not agree with HB . I truly feel if the majority had been in agreement with him, the thread would have remained.

Difference is none of us are telling lies about the man. We certainly can't go on PAs board and say anything. Therefore everyone there will listen to him and believe. The followers there are like Jim Jones followers were, though this time it is literary death they are being lead too. I'd like to see everyone here do really well as authors or publishers. Show PA that none of us are sheep, and can be successful in spite of what they did to us Rising like the phoenix from the ashes.

CE,

I'm sorry, but as Steven, Teena and LaVerne pointed out, Marcus started this by making comments on the PA board, intended to inflict damage on my publisher, which I was unable to respond to. At the risk of sounding like him, he was attempting to negatively impact the standing and good name (and therefore success) of my employer and publisher. Oh, heck with it, he was trying to take money away from my daughter. Oh wait, I don't have a daughter. (It's a funny reference if you know what I'm refering to, really.) I will not allow his lies to go unchallenged, simply because I am not allowed to post on the PA board. That he can not or chooses not to respond to fair criticism of his remarks here is nothing if not deservedly ironic.

I do not read anything on that board, there is nothing there to interest me.

I understand your frustration. However, what damage do you think this guy can actually do? Behler Publications has no cause to answer his commentary of nonsense - their integrity stands on its own, regardless of his comments.

Replying only gives him a foothold, the understanding that he's hitting buttons. I have little doubt that all of you at Behler will simply step over him and continue on your way.

Those who would choose to listen to him are already wearing blinders they cannot see, and will have to discover them on their own. Replies here to specific commentary elsewhere aren't really going to help.

I don't mean to call anyone out here, but I do not think (my personal opinion, now...) that this thread is the pinnacle of professionalism. The world was not born at that other message board, and I would be willing to bet that much of it does not even know that it exists.

I won't drag this out, I just thought I would make that point.

CE, I happen to agree with you whole-heartedly. As it turns out, this whole thing is a non-issue, something I stated previously. My only reason for clarifying our position is due to the fact that I had a number of authors who wanted to submit and were afraid that what was being said was true. This is the impact HB had hoped to make. As it turned out, it backfired.

We're new and trying very hard to establish ourselves as being open, fair and honest. Authors talk, and gossip spreads like wildfire, regardless of whether people have heard of PA or not. I felt the need to assure potential authors that our viability is not only great, but gaining every day.

As far as I'm concerned, this is now a dead subject and there is nothing more to be gained by beating a dead horse. I know the true impetus behind what happened and I don't question the motivations one iota. But, I'm also not going to take an attempt at smear tactics lying down either. Many a good reputation has been besmirched by dishonest impulses, and we've worked too hard to establish the direction in which we're headed.

Hehehe.

As I said, I do understand the issue. I hope it didn't seem like was was coming down on anyone (for who am I to do that, anyway?).

I do want to say that I'm not discourage answering arguments to posts elsewhere... honestly, it's the title of this thread that bothers me - even though I'm not saying it's untrue or unwarranted, just not the prettiest of things.

Anyhow, that's all.

C.E., if I would have known HB couldn't post here, then I would have still done it. I call the man out on the PA board as well. I'm not going to let him smear Behler, Lynn, or Behler's authors just because he doesn't like them. He does way worse when people say, think, or look at PA in a bad way. And I wouldn't have done it only for Behler either. I would have done it for any company he bashes that he doesn't have any knowledge about.

Jusr because he does it is it right that I should as well? No. But it is good to give the man a taste of his own medicine once in awhile.

SIGH.
I am such a smart ass, I am going to re-post my first post

Why does anyone even talk about this any more?
Hear the sound of HB?
It is the sound of one hand clapping...
(to steal a one liner from Harlan Ellison)

Still as valid as when this crap started.

I could give a flying f&*k at a rolling tire what he says or any of those at a place where they yank the message and treat writers like simpletons. I do not troll their boards, nor will I give further attention to a someone who craves it.

How is that?

CE,

Sorry for the momentary lapse of unprofessionalism. I am rebuked. I appreciate your opinion and guidance on this issue. I started this thread immediately following a worried email from one of our authors, and a glance over at that guy's post (I don't read the PA boards as a rule). I was mad. I'll count to ten next time.

"I hope it didn't seem like I was coming down on anyone"

Well, my friend, of course you were. You were rightfully coming down on me. I need to be more mindful of my new position prior to posting rants on messageboards. Thank you for pointing that out.

HB,

(I know you're reading this)

I apologize for the tone of my response. Give my best to Jane and Montana Sky. Rock on, dude. And seriously, you're not helping your writing career with this stuff. You should consider adopting more of a live and let live approach, stop burning bridges (it's a small industry after all), and concentrate of your craft and marketing.

Dee,

Thank you!

Yes, Dennis,
And George Carlin had a bit about it in his act, I think. That was quite a philosophical question back in the late 50's early 60s, by the "beat generation," as I recall, also. I think that Rod McKuen may have written a poem about the subject, not exactly in those words but with the same meaning. Generated a lot of heated discussions back in my days of sitting around the pizza & suds and coffee houses that were located on the fringes of the college campuses, discussing Shakespeare and the Iliad and especially Socrates.... some things just never seem to get answered, do they? Or the question keeps coming back in a newer form, to be wrestled with by yet another group of newly enlightned visionaries. Sort of like if there is no gravity on the moon (in space), how does the flag stand out blowing wide at attention?

"Sort of like if there is no gravity on the moon (in space), how does the flag stand out blowing wide at attention?"

Dennis, there is gravity on the moon. It is about 1/6th of the Earths gravity. If there wasn't any then as soon as man landed there he would have floated off. As for the flag? If there was more gravity it would fall down, it is spread out because the astronauts pulled it out that way. With no wind to move it then it will stay that way until something causes it not too.

They also put a rod in the top of the flag to make it stand out like that.

I'd have to buy the rod idea, as even with 1/6th the gravity, the flag would still fall, unsupported (and on an estimate, a flag would fall at an acceleration of around 5 ft/sec^2 -- roughly)...

So, after 1 second of time, the flag would be falling at 5 ft/sec...
For the sake of argument (and because I don't have that much time to kill), let's say the flag was flying 5 feet high...so at the end of 1 second, the flag is in a heap at the astronaut's feet.

So, I think it would be safe to say there was a rod holding it up...

I'm lots of fun at parties......
:-P

(and for all those that want a factoid to impress their friends...a flag flying 5 feet high on the moon would hit the dust (of the moon's surface) in 0.96523 seconds)

I remember the day they planted that flag. I had raced two heats in the 280 Cu.in. inboard hydroplane race on Grand Lake St. Mary's in Celina Ohio and we were listening to the car radio on the way home and had to stop in a bar to watch it on live TV (and devour a hamburger or two).

It looked like a rod holding the flag out when they stuck the pole in the ground... But I still think it was the starch.

I heard about the rod on Art Bell a couple years ago while he was interviewing an astronaut. I forgot who (Gordon Cooper perhaps?)
I think the topic was touched if we ever went to the moon.
I still think intelligent life on the Earth is a fine find.

Of course, I will yield to others who were older then. I was 1 at the time of the moon landing.

I recall Steve Austin fighting BIGFOOT on the 6 million dollar man, though. Lee majors VS Andre the Giant? That is entertainment.
