What's your theory on Agents? Does anyone know of any agent who handles Fiction, based on a true story or Non-Fiction genre? I have a list off preditor and editors web site, (Thank you, Dave!) but I am wondering if anyone has worked with an agent and can recommend one?
My novels are very--well? Let's just say not erotic, but borderline shocking. The past I had was colorful, from National House of Congress scandals to local mob bosses having their spouse killed. So, it's a good story, just wrapped in a the red light district of Houston. (Where all the great gossip is born). Any ideas?
Help if you can.

Truth is, the folks on here have not had much luck with agents. Those who have agents are those who write Christian genre.
My experience with agents has been rejection, rejection and rejection. If not rejection then worse...
I've run across a lady named Carr who took me for about a hundred bucks. Another named Mills who seemed square but turned out to be another shark. Then there was the one who worked for Publishamerica and sucked me into that mess.
I'm working with Hartline at the moment for representation of a Christian fiction. Once I get the manuscript the way the agent wants it, I feel confident she will take it.
Best advise --- be very careful.
Also, there are some lists on the net of agents listed by genre. I found this to be a big help to locate agents (just be ready for rejections).

Have you checked out Preditor and Editor web site? They have authors all around the world comment on the agents they find. Just curious.

It's a good site and any agent with a positive review there is probably worth having. After a round of rejections I am trying to build my number of published short stories before trying again. Agents are slippery and hard to get hold of.

I tell ya. I am scared to death. My story is about my journey to self discovery and acceptance. It isn't pretty in a lot of parts. That's what makes it so intense, but still, it's more a spiritual journey than anything. Funny thing is that when they read the first 5 chapters of the first book, they get all hissy. They refuse to hear the story. I may have to change that to more main stream, but it takes away from the message of the book. The shock is there, becuase that's who I was. I don't really know what to do. I am sitting on four books, that several women I don't know read and love. My reviews are awesome. Now, if I could just get an agent to understand who my market is. I could sell the bottom out of this book. I even have radio and news agencies waiting for my new publisher for publicity. Argh...I may never get there.

If the work is not genre you may do better by identifying medium/small publishers with similar work and approaching them directly. There are a lot of not-so-big publishers with niche interests -- they are more approachable because their slush pile is a lot smaller. |
