I took the bait last night, joined Google Print, and uploaded my first two PDF's plus covers. Since Google Print is free, I could not readily see any downside. However, I thought I would ask what experiences others have had with Google.

I've used Google AdWords for a number of months and have gotten 791 hits on my website from all over the world for .05 cents a hit...but until I hear from publishers, have no idea if books have been sold as a result.

There's a big stink going on with publishers right now over Google Print. Lots of discussion regarding copyright violation and stuff.

Before I commit to anything, I'll wait for the courts to sort things out.

As far as I can tell, the ones that are successful in getting their books yanked are ones that didn't request they be put on there to begin with. I don't know how it would work if you set it up (wanted it) and later changed your mind.

Google says that the PDF's are displayed in a read-only format that makes them secure from copyright infringement. Of course, nothing on the web is completely secure, however, there is no reward without risk.

As of today they changed the name from Google Print to Google Book Search.

Publishers aren't worried someone is going to steal the work from Google. They're irritated that Google is scanning in the work in the first place. I was just curious about opting in as a way to control it before Google opts you in against your will.

They're currently doing that with each and every book in some libraries, and that's why they're being sued by several publishers. They're literally taking carts, filling them with books, wheeling them to a back room, scanning them in, and putting them back on the shelf.

And they're claiming that by getting PUBLISHER's permission, they're okay. As opposed to say, the AUTHORs that actually own the copyright!

I listened to a report about this on the radio. Google claims it is simply trying to establish the internet equivalent of a card catalog. However, it is clear that what they are attempting is something much more substantial. That they found it necessary to change the name of the program from Google Print to Google Books is a fair indicator of how much negative publicity they have been getting.

I don't get it. What's the harm of giving the author and the publisher some unsolicited publicity? The big question we need to ask ourselves is: Is this going to increase sales? Yes, we own the copyright and it definitely is our perogative to do with it as we choose. However, as we are all too aware, what we need most is publicity. If there is an upside to Google Books, it is that it puts the books of POD and independent publishers on an even keel with those of the big publishing houses. That is why I think we need to get behind Google Books and support it.
