True Blue Forever
Second Edition
ISBN 0-9722385-9-X
Now available to order from Author's Ink Books

Includes Bonus Feature--"On The Way to Forever"

TBF Cover

For those of you who haven't read it already, here's one of my favorite reader reviews:

Ms. Scarbrough has a wonderful storytelling skill that is evident from the first page of this delightful little gem, True Blue Forever. The characters are three-dimensional, completely believable, and I know I will miss them when I'm done.

Ms. Scarbrough has a wonderful grasp on the structure of dialogue between her characters, and one forgets while reading that he is, in fact, reading--one of the great true tests of a good writer. And the character development is as good as I've seen from any author, even the most well known in our pop culture.

The many emotional and psychological layers explored in the lives of her characters and in the relationships they share add so much depth to this story and render every relationship in this book full of life and color. Wade is reprehensible--we know that--but Wade has a history with Jeana, one that transcends a flippant tossing him off as a thug or a jerk. We care about Wade, even in his imperfection. And Ms. Scarbrough's natural ability to weave such a spectacular and multi-layered story is to blame. It's her fault. :-)

Thanks again to LaurieAnne for believing in my first born!

And at $13, a much better buy than your former publisher...
Unfortunate that it's still sold on Amazon by them.

Actually, Todd, the only thing available on Amazon.com is one used copy of the former version at a whopping price of $61.42! Don't know what the deal is with that, but I don't think anyone will be buying it!

Yes, Harry, I'm a multi-monikered woman, and that wasn't even including my husband's favorite nickname for me--Busty LaRoux (borrowed from Homer Simpson).

Yes, Joyce, the best of luck this time around with TBF. After we exchanged earlier this year, I took your story with me to New York to read, but got sidetracked by countless other things just as I began it. So I've got it with others for reading this winter. But I can tell you right now, that based on the couple of chapters I did read during the summer, if I were still teaching junior high, I would be inclined to order your book for the class (although I would certainly finish it first). I hope there are teachers out there still practicing who will do the same, based on some of the recommendations from others.

Again, good luck.

Thanks, everyone, for all the encouragement and support!

Frank, most of my promotional efforts this time will be aimed at getting schools to use it for a novel study since it's reasonably priced now. However, I'll be concentrating on high schools because I know middle schools in the South would balk at the sex and profanity, mild as it is.

My daughter read it when she was 12 and we had some great discussions about abstention, teenage drinking, responsibility, etc., but too many parents seem to avoid that kind of stuff at all costs. Sure, let them hear about it from their peers and the mindless teenage idiot movies out there, right?

BTW, the wild-haired Billy Joe lookalike on the cover is my son TJ, and the batter with the hot legs is my husband in high school. (He's also one of the football players.) LA gets all the credit for coming up with the cover idea and the artwork.

Fred, maybe you could take up writing in a nearby stream and submit to Whiskey Creek Press.

Wow. It's been...what...two months almost since I popped in over here, hasn't it? I shouldn't even be on the computer right now. I have a pile of manuscripts yet to get through. So, here's a "Howdy!" from little ol' me.

Joyce, honey, thanks for the credit, but I'd say it was an awesome fair split.

Any woman who reads True Blue Forever had best have a decent package of tissues handy. As for you guys, I won't even insinuate that you might spill water from your eyes. My husband refuses to be my guinea pig for that test. But I know that none of my reading group made it through TBF in one piece.

Anyhow, the 2-hour choir practices are done, the Christmas Cantata has been successfully performed, my voice made it through without cracking, and I'm looking forward to actually seeing my desk uncovered. (And since I have the next week off of the day job--that's right, the first I've had more than 1.5 days since early 2002--I should actually be able to make a little headway.)

Well, I see it's been pretty quiet around here, and I'm not sure when I'll have an opportunity to pop back in again. I believe that my 15 minutes of free time for the day are efficiently used up.

Blessings all,
LA

Still making tough guys cry and grown women swoon over Billy Joe. Here's the most recent review I got from Carolyn Howard-Johnson for MyShelf.com:

"That True Blue Forever, by Joyce Sterling Scarbrough, is set in Alabama decades ago is the reason this book feels so nostalgic; it's also the reason the story rings true. It is hard to find a book quite like this one these days, because life is different now. Many say that truth is stranger than fiction. Here is a coming-of-age story, a romance, a high school romp. It is like many I have read and yet so unlike them. Told from Jeana Russell's point of view, it recalls a time that now seems lost in fog. A time when pregnancy was the major fear, and when young people cared at least as much about one another as they did about the college they might attend. It is full of rah-rah stuff and personalities. The jock. The intellectual. The kid who has trouble getting the girl in spite of a personality and a sense of humor so memorable that I am still in love with him weeks after reading the book.

The thing that makes True Blue so unusual is the way Jeana handles the problem she faces. To tell you what that is might prove to be a spoiler. Let's just say that it appears that her approach to it seems so improbable that one has to believe it. It sets the reader to wondering why a bright young girl would make the decisions our protagonist did. At first I thought Jeana's decisions curious because she lived in a different time, but that didn't set quite right. The answer I settled on was influenced by the recent UCLA study that shows the matter in our frontal lobes is not fully developed until we are about 25 years old. (It’s a bit earlier for girls but not early enough to save them from some very bad decisions in high school). That brought the story up-to-date. It is highly unlikely that the human brain will begin to mature more quickly anytime soon, so it goes back to that lack-of-judgment thing. Teens then and now might react as Jeana did. Flawed reasoning might get them into a whole lot of hot water."
