I spoke to a writers' group today. I'd just started when someone else came in the room. It was Robert Beattie, the guy who wrote the book about BTK. (Nightmare in Wichita.) He was all over the news during the whole BTK thing. I talked to him after the meeting. What a nice guy. He told me something interesting. After writing a best seller about BTK, he sent his next manuscript to some publishers - and was rejected. This one is about Charles Manson who, btw, calls his house from time to time.
Robert says that success with one book doesn't always help you with the next. He's thinking about writing a novel now, based on his experiences.
Not sure if you all know this, but Robert's book is the reason BTK came back. I asked him how he felt about that. He said that bringing closure to the victims' families was probably the most satisfying thing he's ever done.
I would love to sit down and spend some real time talking to him. Maybe sometime.
I gave him a copy of Malevolence.

As a kid in Wichita during that really scary time, I can understand why meeting him would be so interesting and exciting...especially since you were writing for the Eagle/Beacon at the time.
Didn't you report on BTK for them?

Last year at Love is Murder the featured guest was Judith Guest, author of Ordinary People. After the success she had with Ordinary People, the book AND the movie, she took her second manuscript back to the same publisher who rejected it! She found a second publisher for the manuscript and after its success she took the second publisher her third manuscript, and -- you guessed it! -- it too was rejected. She found a third publisher but it didn't want her fourth book, and so it went. Each of her books was published by a different publisher. Saying this is a crazy business is an understatement!

I guess the question in regards to second rejections from the same publisher is whether they came close to breaking even and/or hitting the advance the first time around...
