Thanks, Claudia. Not sure how many books I'm selling, but my Amazon numbers aren't real encouraging.

To be honest, I'm so focused on finishing my Barbour book, I haven't spent much time worrying about it!

Nancy, Amazon numbers don't mean squat (I know you've heard this before). For example, we have two books in print now, and when I go to check sales on my LSI page, I'm seeing sales. But it isn't reflected in the Amazon numbers, so they're selling elsewhere.
And you're right, its better to focus on other things than worry about what might or might not be selling.

LSI is Lightning Source, Inc and you can go there by LSI.com, I think..... they are the primary printers of all POD - Vanity - likes of PA books in the country. You type in the ISBN and that will pull up a listing of how many books under that ISBN have been printed over the past course of time broken down by sections, months, weeks, half year, etc.

You might want to do a google on LightningSource to make sure about the dot.com listing though.

Sorry folks, you can't check LSI listings. I can, since I'm a publisher that uses them. That's how I know our books are selling, despite the poor showing on Amazon.
Didn't mean to cause any confusion.

And incidentally, just because someone may choose to go the route of digital printing, it does not make them a vanity or PA-like company.

I didn't mean that at all Jenn. I was just using that as an example so that Fred would know that most of the companies out there use LSI at one time or another and sometimes all the time. I just didn't phrase it too well, and I am sorry for the unintended inuendo.

Didn't they (LSI) used to let anyone be able to pull up the sales list on line, it seems to me that I went there a few times in years gone by and checked on my book through them. And also we used to be able to call them and give them the ISBN # and there would be a recording that came on and stated in a very computer friendly voice the numbers of books printed for whatever quarter or some such. I guess things always change with growth and newer abilities to narrow the public out of the loop, huh???

I think you're thinking about the Ingram automated number, Claudia. Which I believe is still in place. But the only people who can check actual LSI stats are the publishers who are involved in the particular book in question.

And I know you didn't mean anything by it. I just had to clarify as well. We chose to go that route for now because we were losing a lot of money on print runs--and this was a good option for the time being. Not to mention that we CAN use LSI for small print runs (better printing costs this way) whenever we need to). And the service is great. They print and ship within two days. So for PA to state that the printer is backed up or some such nonsense... that's an out and out lie.

You're right that I was thinking about Ingram, but not totally right about my thoughts on LSI. I remember looking them up and going to their website and being able to check stats, way back when my book first came out, before the first royalty period was up, probably somewhere around January of '02 and getting in to their site and being able to look up my book or the timing it was being printed/shipped in or something like that (because I needed books by a certain time and PA couldn't/wouldn't get them to me (that old lie you touched on in your answer)), but I don't know how I did it then, or how it was possible. But I was thinking and getting Ingram mixed up with LSI for the most part.

I also don't know if Ingram's number is still working or not. Someone who has a book still in print should check that out one of these days. It is a good source to have.

(shrugs) All I know is that I can only check my own books now, and I don't see a place anywhere that allows an author to log in and check their stats or shipping times etc. Probably has been changed if that was the case back in 02.

I suspect with PA that its a simple matter of, 'we'll order the books when we feel like it', because once LSI gets the order, it's quite fast. I ordered 150 copies of one of our books (its selling quite well so I like to keep some on hand), and I got them shipped within 3 days of the order--that's printed and shipped to me in about 7-10 days. My offset printer can't match that speed.

PA probably also waits for the check and/or credit card to clear...and then there's always the case that they have to stick it to authors they don't like.

And when your ordering clerk is pulling triple duty as board censor and nasty-letter-writer, you can't expect them to do much quickly...

(though I just realized we're not on the Watchlist...so I suppose we should get back to the original topic).
