I've just spent over an hour and a half listening to what I would consider a telephone "infommercial." The title was "Three secrets to getting on National TV." The premise is that publicity is a lot better than advertising and these folks are going to train you on how to become famous through publicity, getting booked on Oprah, Fox News, Montel, etc. I can't afford the almost six grand enrollment fee so I doubt I'll be headed for New York this September for the "Meet the Media" seminar. But I did pick up a thing or two from the presentation. You need 1. A hook, 2. A polished pitch, 3. A Network Hmmmm... I think I already knew that. But it does reinforce my belief in the value of conferences. There's just no substitute for sitting across the table from a genuine literary agent and discussing your manuscript. If your demeanor exudes enthusiasm there's a good chance that the agent may feel the vibes and request a submission. Conferences are usually about a $450 - $500 investment and I do about three or four a year. Someday I like to see some results. Dennis Collins Moderator www.theunrealmccoy.com |
