I was in the local waldenbooks today - Monroe is not a big place - and I checked out the local authors section.

Kind of ticked me off -- way back when I had Wings books out and before then the PA rag, the same owner refused to consider stocking my work. So now, there are Authorhouse, PA, and others on the shelf.

I wonder if Waldenbooks on the corporate level has made a change in policy?

Don't know, Perry, I don't even think we have a WaldenBooks here anymore. I seem to remember that they closed up the last outlet they had here a while back, but I may be wrong about that, as I NEVER go to the Mall, so, if it is still open, I just wouldn't see it.

Doubtful a change in corporate policy.
Perhaps the same owner has decided that keeping local authors happy is a good way to keep them coming back to buy books.

I'd ask the owner about it. (do you mean manager?)
My personal guess is that they're running some sort of consignment deal with the local authors, versus truly stocking the books.

If you truly meant owner...maybe the manager changed?

We don't have a Waldensbooks in Jax anymore, but I had asked Books-a-Million to stock one of my books and they wouldn't -- they wouldn't even let people order it and have it sent to the store. It had to be ordered, paid for and delivered to their home. Yet, they have books from other places that are quite obviously self-published, etc.

There are some authors who are just wonderful self-promoters and self-marketers and they get the shelf space. They appear on the news and in the papers and almost everyone of them are self-published or published by a POD publisher. Yet, no one knows that because readers don't care and the people "talking" them up either don't know or don't mention it.

Those are the authors whose books were on the "local author" shelves in Jax. The same handful everywhere, appearing at every festival and every literary hootenany. They are all from the other side of town from where I lived and all from higher economic levels and better industries, etc. So, they have more doors open to them.

This is not some bitter tirade. It's just how things are. My books may or may not have been better than theirs, but no one will ever know because those doors didn't open for me. I am just not a wonderful self-promoter.

My husband still drags me into Books-a-Million once in a while (that's the only bookstore we've found out here), but I haven't bought anything from them in a long time.

I found Barnes and Nobles to be much more receptive and B Dalton Bookstore is where I had a booksigning and where I know for a fact my books were stocked. So, that is where I will shop.

Anyway, try again. You may find things have changed. I think there are so many authors right now going with other publishers than those few huge names, bookstores are a bit more receptive than they were a few years ago.

When my book was moved up from the PA imprint to Independence Books imprint over at PA, they sent me a letter saying that they had written a deal with Waldenbooks to stock their titles. I guess that there was a "return" clause in the agreement provided the books were purchased directly from the publisher.
