This morning I was contacted by a bookstore in Lansing, MI to schedule a signing. I have my choice of dates: Nov. 30 or Dec. 21.

This store is in a boutique neighborhood less than two blocks from the State Capitol building. In addition to government employees a lot of the clientele comes from the dorms at nearby Michigan State University.

I'm not sure when the Christmas Holiday begins for the school or the government; wouldn't want to do a signing in a ghost town. I've never done a pre-Christmas signing before and have no idea what to expect.

Which date do I choose???

December 21 is my birthday (everyone remember to send gifts). Do it then.
I'm guessing their business, like most retail, steps up during the holidays.
You might nab several last minute shoppers who are desperately shopping for ideas.

personally Dennis,

I would say, going against Bill's erstwhile advice, of going for the Nov 30th date, if you/Behler can swing it, because school is still in session, business will be at full tilt for the Christmas season buying, and people will be more prone to buy your book to give to someone else, if they have a chance to read it also (ah fooey, you know people that do it, and maybe betcha you might just do it yourself). You know, they can read it before they package and send it or give it to whomever they are getting it for, and that way you get two or more readers out of each book, yes a bit less money for you, but more positive support, knowledge tat you are out there as a writer, and praise if the first buyer (giver) likes it. Time is of the essence and I would think that it behoves you to give the potential buyer as much time as possible, Dec 21st is cutting it a bit thin, to my way of thinking....

I have to agree with Claudia.
The Nov. 30th date is right at the start of the traditional Christmas shopping season. Not to mention that most people will still have enough money to do said shopping at that point.

My personal opinion is that last minute shoppers are going to splurge for gift cards, to avoid having to find time for wrapping.

I think Nov 30th as well because I think by Dec 21st, the campus and the Capitol will be closed. That is the Thursday before Christmas, which is on a Monday. I think many people will take those two days prior to Christmas weekend to travel.
