Indeed, if we want to make a living out of writing we perhaps should not quit our job too soon.

For me I want to write something I like to read myself, and I enjoy writing. If ohers read it, things get even better, and if I will get it published by a normal publisher that would be great, and I certainly will give that a try.

But I will not commit suicide if I never will get published; I will make it available on the internet when I arrive at the bottom of the publisher list.

These figures were presented by Border's at a meeting with marketing and sales reps from a book distributor.

A. In 2004 there were 1.2 million books published
B. of those 1.2 million, 950,000 sold less than 99 copies
C. Another 200,000 sold fewer than 1000 copies
D. 25,000 sold more than 5,000 copies
E. Fewer than 500 sold more than 100,000
F. 10 sold over a million
G. The average book in the United States sells about 500 copies.

What do the bookstore chain buyers look for?

#1 Packaging - cover design - eye appeal

#2 PR/marketing (by author and publisher)

#3 Good content - well written

I find it very interesting that simply presenting a well written book won't cut it. Quality finishes a distant third in the decision making process. It's got to have "Bling!"

Harry, you may be on to something. The technology certainly exists to produce a book with a flashing cover. The first one that comes out will undoubtedly be a best seller.

Wonder if it will be rechargeable???

Well, let's hope so Dennis.

It reminds me of the 1995 CD 'Pulse' of Pink Floyd, that had a pulsating red LED, but I'm not sure if people bought it for that feature? Still it might be the direction publishing might be heading: huge flashing signs saying: 'BUY ME, or you life will be miserable.' And on the inside indeed Atlanta Nights like story telling.

Jack up the price a couple of dollars and give the rubes a free bottle of snake oil with every book they purchase. Better yet, take a tip from Bill Gates and bundle your bestsellers with your novels that didn't fare very well. And while you are at it, pitch those ideas to Wilhem. Last time I heard, he was offering newbies stock in his latest IPO, PulishAntarctica.
