I've been thinking about something lately. It seems like every time I attend a conference I run in to another author or two who has been dropped by their publisher because of their sales record. These mid-list writers still have loyal followers and sales in the thousands. But Penguin/Putnam and their crowd want your sales to be in the tens of thousands. It seems to me that these writers would love to keep their names in front of the public and they are true veterans when it comes to promoting.
I've heard that Five Star Publications built a good part of their business on the strength of these familiar names and it looks like Echelon may be following that path to a somewhat lesser degree.
Seems to me that it would be a win/win situation for an emerging publishing house to latch on to an orphaned author with a respectable track record.
Any thoughts?

There has been a lot of orphaned authors lately, especially with the fallout of the Triskelion bankruptcy.
A win/win situ? Sure.

I was reading a blog (can't recall which) where an agent dropped a highly successful author. I'm certain other agents were chomping at the bit to pick up that author.
I'm certain emerging publishers salivate at the chance to pick up successful authors as well.
